SKID PLATES

DQDick,

We just came back from some moderate off roading outside Mesa AZ. I have a 2500 RAM Cummings W/2-wheel drive. (Will not consider changing to 4-wheel) No problem on the trail. There were some spots where you needed to be careful not to high center the truck.
However, some of the guys were talking about maybe I should look into having skid plates installed on my oil pan & transmission if I'm going to continue to do some off roading. I know you talk about doing a lot of off-roading. What's your thoughts about the skid plates. I valve your opinion.

Thanks, Larry-P

If I was going to drive off road I'd certainly want skid plates, maybe a differential plate also

Hi Larry. If you plan to off road with your truck, it's a good investment to have the skid plates. All it takes is one sharp rock, and your spilling oil. And if your somewhat handy, you can install them yourself.

Absolutely! Been off-road in since the early '80's and wouldn't be without them.

There's just something about being out where most have not that is appealing.

Usually bolted on. Look at some off road sites or just Google ram 2500 skid plate.

Mine are bolted on. Costs more to have the truck worked on, but well worth it. Nothing like seeing the animals and the sites others wish the could.

Hi

I grew up in the South Florida swamps and beaches; I have tramped around in the Congo, Amazon and Panama jungles and been off road in the Sahara and Serengeti planes. Kind of kills your interest in off road adventures on the North American continent.

Hi Larry. Jay and Dick are correct, they are bolted on. Do a little research first. Some will cover areas that you may want easier access to. I'm not familiar with the Ram, but I know some brands are better suited for the GM trucks. It's not a difficult DIY project. Search YouTube for an installation video. You can learn just about anything on YouTube these days.

I can't speak for all brands, but GM has similar frame configurations 2wd or 4wd. You may be able to purchase them used from an auto salvage yard and bolt them on without too much aggravation.
