Trapped in the wrong Campground!

Did you ever get your rig so deep into a tight situation where you wanted your "mother"! I did it again! I was back at the Trinity Center KOA near Weaverville Ca. I was given a map and told my site was just "over there "! I climbed in the rig and started down the first right hand path...around this bend, and another. Tight turns, big rocks and trees.. Lots and lots of trees. I was alone with my two dogs, Sue had elected to join me in a couple days. Finally I stopped. Got out the map and sure enough I was smack dab in the "tents only section"! I called the office for help...when I told them where I was, the lady repeated what I said out loud to others in the office. All I heard was "roaring laughter". The lady could not contain herself. They send a person to take pictures and assist me. After first ten minutes of him relaying my plight back to the office, along with tears of laughter, we got down to worst experience in towing I ever had! It took over two 1/2 hours to back out 250 yards! I never hit anything, but lost 10 lbs of sweat! My photo and the story of the guy that took his big Montana into the tents area will be shared again and again,

Wonderful, they can't be bothered to escort you to your site but they have no problem having fun at your expense. The way they are laid out, the attitude of the staff, the fact that they take your money when you make a reservation and the cost for what you get all keep me from ever considering a KOA. I'd rather boondock in a Pilot.

Hi

Don’t feel bad I did the same thing when we had ours about about 6 months.

It was the Lake Josephine RV Park in Lake Placid Florida. I made a wrong turn and wound up way back in behind the Tennis courts.

We managed to get out and to the proper spot by having people move their cars and flower pots.

Don’t feel bad it happens sooner or later.

Anyone that owns a RV can relate, especially those with a tall 5th wheel. Glad you made it out unscathed.
I usually stop my rig and get out to assess the situation if it looks the least bit hairy. I'd rather take the time to walk the route than get stuck in a bad situation. Takes a lot less time and sweat.

Not me. But a guy at an RV park we were at in Colorado turned off the paved park road onto a narrow gravel trail beside a pond and dropped his driver side 5er tires off in the pond. Took a wrecker to lift and ease him back out. It happens.

To back up what Dick said- sad they seemed to be more interested in having fun at your expense than at least feigning some level of professionalism. I completely understand how they might have been amused, but maybe they could have kept that in check a bit while you were able to hear it. Happy you were able to get it back out of that spot without any physical damage. I have been close to getting "stuck" before and have had a few of those backing in episodes when things just don't seem to be going right. I have always been amazed how sometimes the trailer seems to have a mind of its own even when I am doing what I need to be doing. I consider myself (and others have commented) pretty good at getting in and out of tight spots, but sometimes things just don't go right. -Glenn

I think you may have stirred all the memories of members getting caught in a "situation".

Recently crossed the Canadian border to the US at a spot we had done many times. A smaller crossing, two lanes, one truck/semi traffic the other cars/campers and rv's. We are 13.2" tall and always took the much faster car lane and cleared by one inch under their "posted" 13.2".

In late Sept. we rolled passed a long, long line into the car lane and just at the last moment before hitting the stop lights I noticed the clearance sign had changed to 12.9", stopped instantly, got out, customs officer finally came walking out to me asking what the he** I was doing. I explained my situation and was promptly told to get in the other lane.

Yep, they changed the lane height and no where to turn by this point, had to back straight back past a line of 14 semi-trailers, four way flashers on, all the while moving those in line behind me to go around so I could back up further. Actually did really well, I find backing real easy, but of course caused a real stir and got the thumbs up from most of the semi operators waiting in the long line up. We only lost an hour of our lives that we will never get back and accepted the fact that we were the entertainment for the day for those long hall drivers.

Sorry to hear about the experience, but I think if you do this long enough, it will happen. Glad you were able to extract yourself. IMHO, I think that if a park suspects that this could happen, an escort is owed. You weren't the first to pull into this area.

Yep I think we have all been there,I was at a Thousand Trails resort at Russian River in Cali a few years back and I think the Resort was built in the 30's the roads were SKINNY with tight curves and spots were on the sides of hills,I barely backed into my spot and when I got set up I sat down and downed a few glasses of Vino and watch other 40ft RVer's going thru what I did and a few did not fare well and ripped off awnings and mirrors and one went off the side of the road into a ditch it was AWFUL

Hate to admit it but something similar happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Camping at Fourth Cliff Recreation Area (military campground between Boston and Cape Cod). Mostly cabins but a small number of back-in rv sites. Checked their campground map before the trip and it looked okay - loop road around campground, appears to be plenty of maneuver room. Should have known - as soon as I registered, the girl at the desk said you need to go up this hill and turn left to the site. I said can't I go around the loop? No, the loop is closed :-(. So up the hill I go. I turn left and almost immediately start back down hill around a few curves. Get to the campsite and there is a Bobcat blocking what was shown as the loop on the map. Pull up to the Bobcat and look in my mirror - tires of the trailer aren't even past the campsite entry. Sat for a few minutes trying to decide what to do - try to back up the hill, try to maneuver into the campsite, throw up the white flag and abandon the Montana, cry (seemed like the best option)... Then a worker shows up and says he will move the Bobcat but not far (some relief). He does and watches me struggle to get into the site. After a few minutes of watching me with the DW giving directions, he offers to help and he did. After about 30 minutes of maneuvering (seemed like about 30 hours), sometimes moving only inches, sometimes nearly scraping the campground fence. Got into the site. As others have said, biggest loss was sweat and biggest blow was to my ego. Don't know what we would have done without his help. The campground itself was great and we can't wait to go back - just hope I don't get that same site again :-).

Well I have had my low bridge experience 13'3" RV 12'8" bridge. Then several days latter, RV park in Tennessee in a field, spots not marked and water connections hidden, arrived in a light rain. So lots of soft ground and mud. Roads not much wider than the rig. No one to check us In. Just find a spot and we will be around said the sign on the office door, I found that happens a lot. If it were not for some of the other campers I may not have found where to park. But with their help I was able to get power and water. No one ever came arround. So the next morning as I was leaving I told the wife I should stop by the office and see if someone was there. The last thing I need is to leave without paying when we are in a small town in Tennessee (you know the Sheriff is my brother in law). As it turns out the owner was in so I was able to pay.

Once saw a park employee guide a guy in between two trees, trapped him, and they had to cut down one of the trees to get him out. we all had our lawn chairs out, entertainment of the afternoon.

At least they apparently knew how to cut a tree and have it fall where you want it too or it could have become an even more interesting incident.

We stayed there this year with the Monty too. We had the middle site up on the old gun site. beautiful view over the cliff to the ocean, but you are correct. very tight getting in there. I had to squeeze between two existing 5vrs. It is a shame the storms have washed out loop road. I hope they get the money to fix it. It is a beautiful place to stay.

Here's my story from a park in Ravenna, Ohio. I hope this works as I haven't mastered the forum. http://billandjanrvingtheusa.blogspo...-to-spare.html
The blog is titled An Inch to Spare and this was in September. The story of it is about halfway down the page. The photo was when I finally made it out of there. Didn't think about any other photos when I was navigating the path.

Jason, Does the handle mean you are a CW3? Which branch, retired or active? I'm retired Army. Thought it a bit ironic that we both have 3711's and tow with F350's (although yours is a bit newer). We really enjoyed our stay at Fourth Cliff. Would like to get one of the sites up at the top next time. We were in the site next to the observation tower this trip. Our views were of the river from the bedroom and the ocean from the living room.

Had to smile and giggle a bit. A few years ago, we were entering a park with two other families and took a right when we should have gone left. We had a huge Cardinal and one family had an even larger Montana. We ended up in a loop that we almost took several awnings, a few hanging swim suits and a bike or two. We finally got through the loop from %$^& and were trying to wave off the families following us. They thought we were waving them to come on. There was no cell service and we didn't have our walkie-talkies. We were the talk of the whole park for a day or two.
