Interesting dilemma...18,000k lbs. ?
Let's see if I can set this up as briefly as possible. My Dodge dually diesel, my Montana 3650. A few years ago, when we did alot of research on 5ers, we felt this rig was exactly what we wanted. It was and still is...for now. However, we *may* be going full time within the next year or so....which makes me take a harder look at the rig. Initially, we were torn between two rigs...our current one, and a raptor 400. This 400 had a 1/2 garage with dual side ramps. I loved it, and Judi did too...but, with our inexperience at the time I thought maybe I didn't have enough truck. Which is scary in itself, because I figure my truck tough enough to pull out sink holes.  Sooooo....now I am revisiting this very same model, but still wondering about the truck. This raptor runs about 18k loaded. I'm considering, if this happens, getting a 4500 or 5500 dodge or even an MDT. Judi claims I just want a bigger truck ! nahhh.... 
Your thoughts ???

We had a pretty good discussion on this about a month ago. A combonation pin weight / camper weight will be your limiting factors.

No shortage of folks pulling large Raptors with 3500's. Doesn't make it right, however. You need to do the math.

My 2012 3500 is rated at 28K combine Gross with a 4:10 rear end. My 03 was 21K because of the 3:73 rear end. The higher CGVW was one of my requirements when I had to shop for a new truck because the 03 manual transmission could not be rebuilt. (lack of parts for the synchronize gear - plant burned down)
I am with you. My 3500 Ram will probably be maxed out with an 18K trailer. The bigger issue is the Pin weight on the hitch because my truck gross weight is still only 12300. So I agree probably 4500 or MDT. Also look at the modified HDTs. You can probably get a used MDT or HDT cheaper than a new 4500.

payload of 5,020 lbs.
Gross Combined Weight Rating 23000
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating 12,200
rear axle 9350
Raptor:
Weight 13263 Lbs.
Carrying Capacity 4737 Lbs.
Hitch 2880 Lbs
new 3500 dually lists max towing at 19,550
new 4500/550 list max towing at 18,000.....huh ?
ain't it fun......

All those numbers look pretty, just remember, the bottom line is:
GCWR minus the weight of the truck when ready to tow equals tow capacity.

yep....I figure there's somewhere between 10% and 30% overloaded/overweight rigs on the road.. 
Me? I base my numbers on if the dang truck can pull the rig up Monarch Pass...and stop it coming back down. I could care less what happens going across Kansas.
I'm guessing if I get this rig, I'll end up with either a 4500/5500 or more likely an mdt.

I can go to 30k Gross Combined Weight Rating on my F350. Not close to that but have little to spare at TV max gross of 13300. I do have a heavy hitch (superglide), 50 gal aux tank and generators in the bed. I am a firm believer that we RV'ers can max out a tank.

Took our 08 F-350 in to Ford for its before we go to Florida maint. My salesman was there so to kill some time he quoted me a new truck. Even with the Ford Family plan we can not afford it..Not even close.

Hi Ron,
yep I agree with everything you said. I've even priced out the tow beds.
We are quite torn about this, but we've got lots and lots of time to decide....heck, I'm just into the massive remods on the old rig now, so I'd like to enjoy 'em for a bit before getting rid of it.
I have a few other options I am exploring as well...one of them being adding an outlaw tow bed to my dually. This solves about 45% of my problems. I don't need a huge garage on a towhauler, so the 1/2 garage feature really worked well for me...plus I loved the interior setup of the rig.
We're looking at heading to Oregon/Washington/Alaska next year...so you understand my concerns.

You only have to stop at the scales if you are commercial. I have been thru 21 different states in the past 3 years in the Volvo and have not stopped at a single scale house nor have I been chased down.

RickW... is this true about traveling through Canada? The OP mentioned going to Alaska and unless he plans to use the AK Ferry, ya gotta go through Canada and I hear they are more concerned about weighty rigs. I have a feeling if they look at the GVWR of the Raptor and compare it to the TV there could be a problem.
Like others have said. Look at the numbers for your combination of trailer, toad, TV - a lot of things can vary or affect anything with so many options affecting things. Then actually get to the scales after you think you are compliant then hope the weights confirm it. Keeping this with you will save you a lot of hassles.
Good luck to you. I'm lucky cuz my wife has learned that if I got something like that beefy Raptor we're gonna need a new truck and probably a new Class of license or endorsement, too!

Art - I have not been in to Canada with the HDT so I have no first hand experience. Those who have made no mention of having to stop at the scale houses in Canada. I seem to recall that the rules seem to be the same, only commercial vehicles in the scale house. Most of the conversations revolve around customs, and even then those conversations are about which line to be in prior to the truck being converted. I know there are several Canadians who use HDT for their RV TV and they cross the border all the time as well as US citizens crossing using a HDT with out any issues.
