tire replacement

i know this has been thrown around a lot but need tire replacement advice. would like g614's but my montana high country has 80 psi rims and i cant change all the rims and g614's at this moment, unless i buy the 3625re. w/ big sky package,(next monty). so i need a good substitute for now. will problably have this monty another 5yrs.

Any good quality LT tire will work, we have used Firestone TransForce LTs on our Montanas for years.

Many folks on this forum have had great luck with a good set of LT tires, just make sure they are rated for the weight your carrying.

Best thing to do is go to the scales and weigh your camper, then you know for sure if LT tires will work for you.

Based on the published weights for your unit a 235 85/16 LT load range E would work well for you. Duravis R250, R500, Michelin Rib are very good.

im wondering about weigt, see if my thinking is right. my monty has a gross weight of 12280 on thr rvia sticker, meaning my max weight for the trailer is 12280 , that divided by 2 is 6140 per axle, that divided by 2 is 3070 so each tire needs to be rated for 3070lbs or more for comfort.

Well you are close but not quite right your trl does not carry all the weight there is hitch weight that needs to be taken (or deducted ) from that equation usally 10 to 20% the best way is to get the truck on a three axle truck scale and find out total rig weight this is a good thing to know whether you need tires or not I hope this helps. Other wise pm me and I will send my phone # Merry Christmas. Alan

According to your units specs the hitch weight is 1870 lbs. and this will increase as you load the trailer so a 235-85/16E LT has capacity to spare

Firestone's like Mike. Just be careful some installer idiot doesn't replace your metal valves with rubber ones like happened to me.

Having lived the Marathon experience, I did get almost 8000 miles before my two blowouts, but unfortunately this was in the middle of a trip. And I was so fortunate not to have a lot of damage to my 3800RE. I would post a pic of the tire but I shot it at very high resolution and the forum would hate me for it. Picture the side wall near the tread violently ripped open 3/4 of the way around the outside of the tire with broken strands of steel wire hanging out at odd angles. And this is pulling off the freeway (only towing at 60 mph) almost immediately after seeing a huge amount of smoke in the mirror. And having flown C150's, I learned to constantly scan all around all the time for safety. For your fifth wheel, a good LT tire will be much better than living with the Marathons...my opinion of course. If you can't afford to replace them immediately, drive slow and enjoy the scenery... John

We had the infamous Mission tires on our 06 3400. We ran them for over a year without a problem but changed them out for a much better tire.. However we sold the Missions to a Rv'ing friend that had a much lighter TT and he ran them till they wore out with not a problem. Might not be as much a tire problem but the weight we carry on them.

Very much agree!

The Goodyear Marathons E-rated tires (or any E-rated tire for that matter) that they put on the 16,000 lb. GVR Montana's are at the very upper limit of capacity, and is simply a crime-in-progress perpetrated by Keystone, if you ask me. If they want to run these E-rated tires, at the very least, they should configure the heavier units with triple axles (which would negate any manufacturing cost savings, and thus will never happen).

If I was one of the bean-counters at Keystone, I wouldn't be able to sleep very well due to this issue. It is borderline criminal in my opinion.

What is criminal is that they don't make upgrading at purchase of the 5th wheel easy, and the dealers don't advise you that it is optional when you buy off the sales lot. At least for several years they are putting the 110psi/3750 lb rated wheels on them. I would be more than happy if they just raised the price of the Montanas to cover the added cost and just put G614's or even the Sailuns on all of them from the factory. Unfortunately, it will take the death of an RV'er to get the lawyers involved in a massive class action suit to change things. If they were auto makers, the government would have already been involved.

Oh, I would imagine that a few fatalities have undoubtedly occurred, but any case that does not make it all the way through a trial and is resolved through a settlement pay-off will never be known by any party other than those directly involved, due to, "non-disclosure/penalties for discussing the settlement with anyone", clauses within the settlement contract.
