Not sure about the filters but evidently these furnaces must be fairly sensitive. When mu furnace conked out and had to have the RV repair guy fix it he told me to never block the ducts. He said there has to be a minimum of 4 air ducts open and that is all I have. Don't know why cause I didn't think to ask.

I have an Atwood 35,000 btu furnace, the owners manual states in at least 2 instances that you should not restrict the flow of air to/from the furnace.
The specifications for my furnace recommends a return air of 80 sq inches. That is only 8 x 10 inches, the minimum is 65 sq inches.

If these units were truly designed for full time living they would have a filter system that could be maintained the same way we do in our S&B's. I am sure if I was fulltiming my DW would insist I install some sort of filter system and there would be considerable benefit from doing so, provided you could filter all the return air to the furnace with a proper filter that does not restrict the flow.

I recommend reading your owners manual, make your own decision as to filtration, some who work in the HVAC industry are using some type of filtration, the effectiveness of which has been debated here before.

I would think the main disadvantage of putting a filter in the grate under my stairs is that the furnace would be more likely to pull return air from the basement and other non heated areas, instead of reheating indoor air.
