When it rains...
A few days ago it was the LP gas tank...now it's the stabilizer jack motor. While doing a little prep work getting ready to return to Florida, I attempted to raise the stabilzer jacks...no go. Could not even raise them with the manual jack handle. Seems the jack motor was frozen...after removing the motor, the jacks moved up and down without any problem. HERE IS THE ISSUE: Checked out Lippert's online store and they advertise the whole system (jacks and motor ) for around $525...now here is the whopper: for just the replacement motor they want about $495! Anyone have any experience with replacing the motor...hopefully for less than what Lippert is asking??

Just sent a message to Keystone customer service to ask if they thought the replacement cost of the motor from Lippert is reasonable...on a positive note, the rear jacks do go up and down a LOT faster with the hand crank!

What about taking the motor to get it rebuilt? A starter repair or electrical motor place?

I replaced both jacks and went to two motors, replaced switch and added second switch from Venture who makes the jacks for about five hundred dollars total.

Try Michael and Kat, Snufexpress, I'm sure he just did it recently and I can't remember where he found the motor.

For the rear stabilizers, it seems we should start thinking about a class action suit against Lippert because they did not properly seal the point where the wires enter the housing. I took ours to an Auto & Truck Electric company who, for $99, rebuilt the brushes that had rusted from water seeping in.

Michael, would it be possible to post pictures of the area you are talking about - especially if you sealed it to lessen its tendency to get wet.

When I removed our motor, I did take off the cover (?) plate and there was water in the unit. Think I will see if I can find a place to do the bebuild. A savings of nearly $400 will certainly be worth the effort...thanks!

Tom,
I gooped it up so much I don't know if a pic will show. Just look at the motor and where the wires enter the housing. That is where the leak is.

Michael,
I am having a new motor put on right now at Lazy Days. $264.60 for the motor, $300 in labor to put it in. Covered by extended warranty, thankfully, or I'd be doing it myself.

$300 for labor is ridiculous! It is just four bolts and 10 minutes of work! It took longer for me to get my drill motor out than it did to install the motor!

There have been several times when it's been obvious that if Custer could have charged like RV dealers do he'd still be alive today!

i had the same problem. my back legs would not go up and the motor that they sent the dealer didn't work either. finally the 3rd motor did.
easy to put on and take off legs however.
but now have a new 2013 with the 6 point leveling system.

Walt, I have the broken motor in the "basement" and will deal with it when we get back to Florida. In the meantime, Keystone did get back to me...as I figured, they were not in a position to comment on the pricing since they do not sell parts. No bones to pick with Keystone...Lippert, on the other hand, appears to be in a near-monoply situation and is taking advantage of it (in my opinion). Nearly $500 for a small 12v motor...come on! I will be contacting Good Sam as soon as I can...no rush since we are not really in a position to take our unit anywhere for service at this time...but soon!

If there is a Grainger in the area you might try bringing it to them. They don't rebuild them but they may have a match that is cheaper. If you do please keep us posted. John

Discovered on the first leg of our trip south that the motor appears to be what holds the stabilizer legs in place (up) as you move down the bumpy road...while that may have been obvious to many, it came as a surprize to me when at a rest stop I discovered our stabilizer jacks had made their way halfway to the ground! Imagine if we had made one of those non-stop trips! I can just see these bent/distroyed jacks hanging off the back of our Montana! Well, as most of you have already guessed, I put some bungy cords around the jacks and since then the jacks have pretty much remained in place while travelling. Just thought any of you who find yourself having to remove your jack motor and have to move your Montana, you might want to be aware of this potential problem (assuming removing the jack motor would result in the same result with all jacks). Happy travels!

Michael,
Your rear stabilizers should not move due to the high torque of the motor. This implies that your motor is defective.

I believe they pulled the bad motor and had it in the basement. If that's correct all that's holding the jacks up is a worm gear with no brake on it. Gravity will help the jacks work on that situation and begin to extend.

Having now gone back and reread your original post, I goofed. The motor I replaced was the landing gear motor, not the rear stabilizers. Guess if I'd wake up from my nap before typing I would have more of a positive addition to the discussion. It does seem to me that the front motor would have to be more powerful/expensive than the rear, though.
