Water Pump Issue

For the last six months we have been on the road using city water connections. This is our last week at a CG where we needed to use our internal water supply and pump. About every 8 to 10 minutes the pump appears to cycle for 1 to 2 seconds and shuts off till it happens again. I don't remember this happening before.

This is the original pump on our 2005. If you assume no leaks are present could the pump need replacing?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Bob and Nancy,
It most likely is a slow leak somewhere. Since these pumps are "on demand" a slow leak would be the likely cause. Of course it could be the pump going bad. But every time ours has acted like that we have found a faucet not completely off or a connection worked a tiny bit loose. They can be a pain to trace down but I'd start with the obvious and easy to get at places and see if anything shows up. Good luck and let us know how you end up resolving this issue. Dennis

Bob and Nancy,

I agree with HamRad. I would suspect a slow leak. Start at the pump and slide your hands around any fittings you can get to. Also check the lines on the toilet.
Let us know what you find.

Could also be an inline check valve. That would allow pressure to bleed off but not actually leak externally.

If you do not locate a leak and feel it is in the pump ... just buy the rebuild kit for about $20. Assuming it's a Sureflo Classic Series ... it's really easy to change out the pump diaphram assembly. Just do a search for Sureflow Classic rebuild kits or pick one up at your local "Stealer" for a few bucks more.

Bob and Nancy--- Glad you put this on the forum. I have had the same problem on my 2004 unit and thought maybe it was normal for the pump to do this. Now I know it is not and I'll be checking mine also. Since I just winterize mine, I'll probably have to wait till I dewinterize. I used air this year to see if there is any difference from the pink stuff! I have been thinking of changing out the pump anyway so we'll see what happens! I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if anything else comes up on it!

That would be my guess also, that the disphram is worn and the cause of the problem. Let us know what you find out.

As others have said, it's the pump rebuilding pressure, meaning it's losing pressure somewhere. It could be a water leak at a connection or the check valve (do you see moisture at the city water connection?) or the diaphragm in the pump. Your Montana is at the age where the diaphragm is a definite possiblity. Good luck.

Our pump was pumping water out through the city water connection because the check valve was stuck and couldn't be unstuck. My goodness! Only lasted 11 years of full timing!

On my 2006 3400RL, in the convenience center, there I can switch from the city water into the trailer to filling the water tank. If I forget to switch it back after filling, my pump will run. Again it is a loss of pressure.
