It was junk in the check valve thanks everyone. Scary putting the wrench on it as its soft and could break as OZZ said they can be in tight

Thanks for all the info on changing the check valve at the hot water heater, I received the part, got access but cannot for the life of me get the old check valve to budge, the hot water heater moves when I crank on it. Any ideas?

Thanks, Bob

When I changed mine it took some force to get the old one to budge.

I think its there to support winterizing as a one valve to isolate...in my old SOB there were two valves one on each side and you had to turn both to manage by-pass. I bet it could be replaced by a second valve...and remove the flow restriction.

Decided to use my cordless impact drive to remove, used a 6 point deep socked 1/2 in drive. Hot water heater did not move when using impact wrench.
