Parking surface for tires

Parking on ground surface for six months or should you put a wood plank under the tires to preserve the tires?? What is the best surface to help protect the tires for extended parking?>

For many years, I have carried two plywood boards and park the fiver on them anytime I am sitting for a week or more. Works fine for us.

At an Escapee Boot Camp a Goodyear engineer told us that concrete is the only surface you need to do something about. After a vehical has set for a period of time there is a black mark on the concrete. That's the anti-aging compound of the tire leaching out. According to him, dirt, gravel and asphalt don't do it.

I boondock Sept. 1st to May 1st in Quartzsite every year and park on a concrete slab during the summer and started using a 16 inch wide piece of 3/4 rubber horse stall matting under my tires. It keeps the tires off the ground or concrete and lays great in the back of the truck when traveling. It's something different but works for us.

I did similar to Desert Rat, bought a 3x4 stall mat on sale at Tractor Supply and cut it into four 1x3 sections and put them under the tires while here in Florida for 6 to 7 months.

Our covered parking space is gravel. I put a piece of plywood under each tire and jack up and spin tires a few times every 2 months. Stayed home this winter and only started doing this with new Sailun tires. Over kill I know, but I spin tires to move grease around on bearings.

When I had a gravel pad (previous house), I used lumber under the tires. Now I'm on asphalt (over 11 years now) different house. One side is on lumber, the other is not. It helps to level the fifth wheel. If parked on grass or sand, I always use lumber.

I carry four plastic placemats that I got at a garage sale for a quarter just in case I have to park long term on concrete.

Our storage facility is gravel and I like it because it allows any rain water to pass on through.

We were advised by a Goodrich engineer (a fellow RV'er) tires will wick moisture which can damage steel belts. Cement and wood will not prevent wicking and he recommended porous plastic leveling pads. We followed his advice and had no problems with our tires during our 15 years of full time traveling.

I use wood & plastic leveling blocks. The wood blocks on the ground & the tires sit on the plastic blocks allows air to circulate around them. I also do the same for my car when it sits in the garage for 5 months while snowbirding.

I put 2 2x6x8' boards down and park on them. Not because i need to but when I park my trailer I don't move the boards I move the trailer to hit the boards just right. Practice putting the tires right where I want them. There is no need to do anything to the tires as the newer compounds in tires doesn't care like the tires from the 50'S
