Recommendations for Winter NM travel

I am looking for advice from my fellow worldly Montana travelers. We will be traveling the end of February through the middle of March through the areas of Las Cruces, Carlsbad Roswell and then Santa Fe and back over through Oklahoma. Does anybody have any recommendations on what to look out for i.e. weather, hills or should we not even be doing it in February? Just want to be safe. I attached the route we be going on from west to east.

Thanks in advance

Larry,

As long as you stay current on weather it is doable. You do have a higher potential for snow and ice at the higher elevations.

That brings to light another question, how does someone keep up on the road conditions along a certain route?

Most states have a 511 app to monitor road conditions. Also monitor regional weather on the weather apps and TV.

State road condition apps are the best way to get current road conditions. Winter chased us from South Dakota to Arizona this last November. Wyoming shutdown I90 to high profile, low weight vehicle's the day we were to go thru because Wyoming was having 55 mph crosswinds on I90. We ended up staying on the border with South Dakota till the next morning. I currently have SD, WY NE and UT 511 apps on my phone which I plan to keep. If it weren't for the app we wouldn't have known! And I definitely wouldn't want to get caught in 55mph crosswinds with my 5th wheel. Good luck in your travels!

Some of it depends on how long you are staying in each area. I would think if only 3-4 days each, then you can just go online and check 10 day forecast for each place several days in advance. I don't think southern NM will be much of a problem, but Santa Fe is 6900 elevation so definitely a problem if snowing.

Larry, we traveled those areas last year in January and March. I use Weatherunderground and Open Snow as my two main sources for weather info. Road conditions I use 511 apps as mentioned above. Also an app called Highway Weather. http://www.wunderground.com

511 is good advice.

One tool I use a lot (professional driver here) is Google Traffic. There is an app you can put on your phone or you can just load Google Maps and then choose "Traffic" in your layers option.

That app uses real-time information to tell you how fast traffic is moving by watching phones (If you allow them to use it in Privacy settings) and gives you a pretty good handle on road conditions. It is not fool proof, but pretty darn good.

Green lines are traffic 55+ MPH, Orange is 35-55, Red is less than 35 MPH. Not a big Google fan, but check it out...

winter travel in NM

Larry, I live in Las Cruces. This time of year roads are iffy. The previous is good advise, however, if you get weathered in wait one day and the roads WILL be open. Some advise on your route, do not take 82 between Carlsbad and Alamogordo, it is two lane, winding and steep. I suggest you take 380 via Roswell. Chandy

Thank you I think will take 62 S. of Las Cruces and come up from the southern section to Carlsbad. Do you think that would work?
