Need an Honest Answer Please

The last time I had a complete wheel bearing maintenance done was April of 2021. They grease and check torque on all the suspension bolts too. They clean and repack the bearings. Because of many things we have not put on 500 miles on the Montana in total these last two years. This year we will probably put on 200 miles to our favorite campground and back home. My question is do I really need another complete wheel bearing service this year?

Bob,

I would not feel compelled to do it.

Would not hurt to pump some grease into the wet bolts, but no reason to do the bearings.

Absolutely not. The number of miles traveled far exceeds the time needed between repacking the bearings.

How Long?

From my 17 years of RVing and travel. One hard lesson was that even when you buy the best tires, the time sitting in one place will eventually cause the tire to fail while towng! So, set a standard on when you will replace tires--also keep mileage but don't expect that to mean much. My standard--no travel on tires over 4 years old. So far I have avoided blowouts while towing about 4000 miles a year.

Nope.. Dexter axle service manual states 12K miles or yearly.. Your mileage is of course way below that number..

I would however take the time to grease the suspension -- ten minute job that anyone can do themselves. And of course properly air up those tires to the proper cold Psi along with a visual inspect of the tires.

Any grease has a life span of about five years. Synthetic has a higher temperature rating. Climate will also effect the grease. I'm in CA and I repack every 2 years which equates to about 5000 to 6000 miles.

Depending on the source of information the answer varies.

It is recommended that trailer wheel bearings should be repacked annually or at least every 12,000 miles. Even if your trailer is not in use, the grease breaks down from condensation in the bearings and causes corrosion to build.

Personally, I'd grease the wet bolts and call it a day. BUT, absolutely grease the bearings next year.

I would skip the wheel bearings and grease the suspension.

I have a 2016 3791RD. We're approaching 10,000 miles on the trailer. I will have the bearings, seals and pins looked at and replaced this year for the first time. Never have had a problem thank the Lord!

In your case... just go. No worries if they were done by a reputable shop as per your post. You should carefully inspect the tires if they have any age on them.

I don't pull mine 1000 miles a year at this point, and have never re-packed them. I jack them up at the beginning of the season, one wheel at a time... check for bearing play and any noises or rough sounding bearings, and then (as per instructions) grease the "easy-lube" spindles while spinning the tire. I don't see the need for a hub packed FULL of grease, so I use a needle to lube the outside bearings at the same time. I have to remove the dust cap for that, but I can get the needle past the washer just fine. I don't remember ever having to tighten the bearings on this rig.
