License Tag Rating!

I had to renew the lovely tags we have here in KY and give the state their taxes for this year. My tags are now rated for towing/hauling 14,000 lbs. I had to pay extra for it but it wasn’t very much, not enough to be concerned about. At any rate, I was asking the clerk about the rating and I was told that is the legal weight you can haul. I was wondering how many people have their tags rated to adequately cover the weight that you are towing? My tag now has 14000 on it. Just curious if anyone watches that.

Our tags in Michigan have nothing to do with towing, unless maybe the commercial tags do.

California doesn't have a weight rating,just commercial but just so you don't feel too bad about the rate hike I just paid the tags for our 3400 and the 07' Big Butt which was a little over 1200.00.

No special plate for towing in Ohio..No weight rating. The total for both tags.. Truck and 3400 = 106.00. I hope Ohio is not watching other States.

I don’t feel too bad. It cost me slightly over $269.00. I guess it’s just another way to get a little extra money for the state. In KY we have to pay property taxes based on the value of the vehicle each year but it sounds like it’s much more expensive in CA. The bad thing is I will have to pay that again in March, they changed the month it was due on.

No ratings on South Dakota tags, either, but our Kansas tags had it on trucks. When I asked because we were over the tag ratings I was told they use the same number for all private trucks of that size class and to not worry about it because it had nothing to do with what we could legally tow/haul. It was just a tax class. That's Kansas, though, and might not be the same for other states.

Tennessee, no special tag for trucks unless commercial. Tag for truck, $25.00. Tag for Montana, $14.00. Ya'll make me feel better!

At least Idaho is not on the high end of this. $96 for my truck for two years and $90.00+ for the trailer.

PA the truck is licensed for combined 26000 and costs just over $400. Since I have 3000 tong weight I know I will never exceed that weight value with Red and Monty.

I have permanent trailer tags, good for as long as you own the camper, about $30. Thats a one time fee not per year. Truck tags about $40. No special towing rate here either.

Iowa goes off the GVWR of the truck. Old truck plates ran me $74.00 for the year, not sure what the new truck will run.

Ouch, that stings! My truck in Idaho is $76 (with personalized plates) and the Monty is $176.

As a previous poster posted from Tennessee said, my Frieghtliner is $25.00 and the 5er is $14.00 we run Vietnam vet tags on all our Vehicles. GBY...

I live in California and do pay an extra fee because I have a truck license plate (check your registration doc). And after 3 years I still pay more than you that do not register in California. I am currently at about $400. Two big considerations for figuring out the fees are the price you paid for the truck and either how much your vehicle weighs or the GVWR (not sure which).

For those of you who recall, I added some the hardware and will be getting larger wheels and tires to increase my GVWR, but I will not recertify my truck because my fees will go up. Because I am a private party, this is legal - I increased my GVWR but don't have to tell the state. What's stupid about all this is that if I pay the higher fees and taxes because I live in California, none of the other states that I drive through get the fiscal benefits. What a bunch of hooey.

Commercially speaking it's a totally different story.

Ours (Ontario) is a total combined weight system. We are licensed for a total (loaded truck & trailer} of 10,660 kg (about 23,500 lbs). Fee is around $350/yr. The trailer itself has a lifetime plate for $35.

Here in Louisiana i have a Disable Vet plate and it cost me $8.00 and thats for the rest of my life my monty was $140.00 thats for life time

I read a recent thread on another forum where a guy was trying to get the weight limit on his tags increased so he could tow more with his truck. Weight limit or capabilty of the truck was not a concern, just what the tag said.

Did same as OntMont, so we're legit if we're ever pulled over to be weighed.
Here in Ontario, a pickup truck is automatically designated Commercial. The nice lady at the MOT office tried to hit me up for a CVOR fee, but there is a clause that exempts motorhomes and trailers not hauled for business purposes, so I declined. CVOR = Commercial Vehicle Owner Registration, designed to track bad truck fleets that don't maintain their vehicles, habitually drive overweight, etc.
But, here's the kicker! The local toll highway, 407ETR, downloads registration data from the MOT. Now, we're classified as a "Multiple Unit Heavy", like a gravel hauler or OTR tractor trailer, and we get dinged big every time we use the highway! As you may imagine, that's very seldom, now. 407ETR has no classification for RV's.

Don't get me going on 407!

Everybody, if you happen to be driving around Toronto, don't use 407. It is a long story, that has no place here, but just be warned. It is the only toll road in Ontario, so as long as you keep off it, you will not have any problems with tolls.
