fredricksburg va to luray va

good sam trip plan sends me on rt 3 to rt 522 to rt 211 to luray, towing 36' f/w. rt211 over the mt doesn't seem safe. Thinking of taking 17 to 64 to 81s to new market then 211 to luray. Anyone familiar with good sam rec?

Ray,
The route across the Mt is not bad as the Mt. is not high. The road is narrow and a little crooked in one spot but not bad. If you feel better not doing it I would take 17 to 66 and then 340 to Luray. 340 runs thru the valley between the mountains. It is about 78 miles across the Mt. route and 100 miles around to Luray on 340. 22 miles with peace of mind.
Hope this helps

Thanks Awaywego, glad to hear 340 is good. I forgot to ask, are there any tunnels on 211 that could be an issue?

Ray, The only thing I remember is the bridge under Skyline Drive and it has plenty of clearance.

Ray, Try 17 to 66 then 340. I do not know where 380 will take you.

Ray, I may be too late with this but, like Wayne, we've towed 211 a couple of times and it really isn't bad at all. Good luck, either way.

I cancelled due to Gov shutdown. I was to go there on Oct 1st, but skyline drive as a Federal park was closed. I'll catch it next fall. Thanks, Ray

We did the same drive in 2012 from Luray to Fredericksburg and had no problem with our 3400RL Montana. Now, we did go to Front Royal down 340 to Luray coming up I 81 from Tennessee because of rainy weather. I didn't enjoy 340 with the traffic and hills on a rainy day. You would top a hill and someone would be turning left. If we do travel that way again, will probably just go over 211 from I 81 and get it over with! We enjoyed Luray Caverns.
