Reconnect ice maker line to cut off valve

Need some guidance. While I was turning on the valve, the small tube going to the ice maker came out. I removed the nut from the valve but did not find a Ferrell inside like I had thought I would. I tried to reinsert the tube after I trimmed off the used end but could not get it to insert into the valve. I don’t see how it can not leak unless it goes inside the valve. Am I missing something?

You need the brass ferrel that goes around the tubing. It is a compression fitting. It will leak or keep coming out without it. Any hardware store will have them.

That is what I thought, but the end where the tube goes seems to have a tapered end just like a Ferrell. It seems like I really need to get the tube to go into this fitting weather or not I use a separate Ferrell. I know when you use copper tubing you slide the Ferrell up on the tube a little bit and then insert the tube into the fitting and secure the nut. I just can’ Get the tube into the cut off.

What if you put the nut on, then a ferrel, heat the end of the hose just a bit with a lighter push it in and tighten down the nut.

We got the old compression fitting off of the cut off. No way for the tubing to have ever gone into it. We are using a new compression fitting that slid on the tube just fine. Thanks for your suggestions. Keep your fingers crossed when we turn on the water and fill up the tank.
