Non-commercial class a drivers license NC

Appears that my Montana and Ram dually combination require a special drivers license. Have spoken with NCDMV headquarters and four local offices. No one seems to know anything about this. Their website is no help, and gives no indication of what to study nor what to expect during the driving test. If you have this license, please give me some information...and, if anywhere near Raleigh, where did you go for the test. Thanks so much!

If you have spoken to your DMV and 4 local offices why do you think you need them special license? Up here in Va we don’t. We don’t seem to have any more problems driving than California does.

If that license is required it is required. Just because some state employees don't know their job is not going to be an excuse for when you do need it. Keep going up the chain.

I just flipped through the NC CDL Handbook.

Study sections 2, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13 and that should be enough for the non-commercial Class A. It's listed briefly in the regular Handbook on page 10 (11/102), but doesn't cover the sections in the CDL book.

Here's a link to Nevada's non-commercial A/B. It's basically the same information, but none of the CDL stuff.

The DPS has separate license classes list here.

The handbook is pretty clear you need a class A non commercial, but gives no clue to what you need to do to get it. Similar to Texas, but the wording for the Texas class A non CDL is for a weight or combined weight over 26,000 lbs and I am just under that. But in Texas you do have to take a written test and a driving test towing the trailer.

Now that you have wakened a sleeping dog, they will see that extra money can be made by requiring a special license!!!

Interesting that 7 states force you into a commercial license, CDL.

Exactly what I tried to tell him in post No 2. Just like Va.

If you go to the NC DOT web site you will find the same requirement many states have. If your gross combined vehicle weight (GCVW) rating is greater than 26,001 lbs and your trailer GVWR is greater than 10,000 lbs then you are required to have a class A non CDL license. Length has nothing to do with it.

If it is based on weight, what is your gross trailer and truck weight?

The license requirements are based on weight RATNGS, not on scaled actual weights. In those states that require it, if the gross combined weight rating of the truck and trailer exceed 26,001 lbs then the class A non commercial license is required even if the scaled weight is less.

Now, how many people are towing with GCWR numbers higher than 26,001 lbs and should have the class A license but don’t? Probably a pretty high percentage. Most people probably never even know of the requirement. I didn’t for years until reading it on an RV forum and checking the Texas DOT web site. But my GCWR is just under 26,000 lbs and class A is not required.

We live in NC and have regular Class C license. Our Duramax and trailer do not exceed 26,000 lbs. Where you have to be careful in NC is your weighted truck tag, you have to pay for the proper weight.

NV is the same way if you use the truck for non-personal uses. If you hook up a trailer for said non-personal use, you better have the truck tag registered for the combined weight. The state troopers love to hit trucks pulling dump trailers with company logos on them to check registrations.

In NC there is confusion regarding what constitutes the "weight". It is supposed to be vehicle weight plus tongue weight. We knew someone ticketed based on total weight (trailer + truck). We verified with DMV and carry a copy of their reply in our vehicle.

MD Non Commercial Class A

Yes In MD you also need a non commercial class A if you are over 21,000 LBS and your trailer is over 10,000 LBS. I spoke with my insurance company and was told if I was to file a clam and not have the correct license they may not pay. I do have my non commercial class A not worth the risk.

Test was not hard. It was the CDl test with out air brakes. Had to do a safety walk around and a driving test. On the road and a backing up test. 100 Feet straight back and a backing up changing lane test.

The hardest part was finding someone with a CDL to take me to DMV for the test....
