Unhappy 2020 3120/3121rl door lock

I'm out camping with friends with their brand new 2020 3120RL. Their door automatically locks with the deadbolt every time they close the door. Is there a way to not have the door lock when it closes? We're all afraid to go out of the rig without the keys.

I don't understand how the deadbolt could lock on its own. Sounds more like to handle lock, if it is locked you can open the door from the inside but the handle will still be locked and you can lock your self out.

For the rare times I ever lock the door I only use the deadbolt and never lock the handle lock.

The door has a vertical pull handle. Door is unlocked, open, and the handle will move freely as if opening and closing while open. Close the door and the handle locks and the deadbolt locks all on their own. You must then unlock the deadbolt and then the door handle can be unlocked both with the key. I've never seen a lock like this before.

We have a 2020 3741FK, which I would assume has the same handle, with the vertical pull handle like you mention. Ours doesn't do anything like that. There is not a setting/lever on there, that I'm aware of that would allow the handle to do that either.

Hummmm...

Sounds like a call to their dealer. Take a video of it happening start to finish.

This style door handle is new to the Montanas, the type has only been around two or three years. The trick is to pull the top of the door handle out toward you. That should do it. Lubing the mechanism helps too.

Ours kinda does this and we have to push in with our right thumb and using the right hand it opens just fine but I think it’s still a pain, when they dropped it off we thought it was broke until we finally got it figured out in the rain none the less.

They found that they have to push in on the door while pulling the handle to open the door.

Same here not to keen on that but it does work and there isn’t any aftermarket options out there that I’m aware of yet.

On my unit the need to “push” on the door (in order to unlock or open the door) can be corrected by adjusting the strike plate - loosen the screws - move it a bit and tighten the screws. Does this not work on the newer models?

Nope it’s out all the way and you can hear the door rattle some when you push and pull it at the same time so it’s plenty loose to be able to unlatch

We have started having a similar thing with our door on 2019 3791RD. The door always felt tight and requires pushing with left hand while pulling the handle with the right. Now it seems that the strike plate has move so much that the door will come open while bouncing down the road. It's still hard to open when latch is closed though. Just started noticing the door opening and haven't had time to try adjusting the strike plate. Thankfully, the hand rail for the steps closes over the door and keeps it from coming open while driving.
I think the tightness has to do with the way the steps fold up into the doorway, even when the steps are down and not in the doorway if that makes sense.

I can tell you 99% that the deadbolt is not locking. have them yry unlocking both locks from the outside. then shut the door. then try to open it.
then lock the door lock only close it with someone inside the camper. have them open the door from inside step out close the door. at this point the door should be locked and need the key to unlock it.
if that happens it is working as it should. if the dead bolt turns itself and locks by itself call a priest.. they have bigger issues.
