Recall

Well I am back from sea. and will be off for 45 days.
We took the trailer in for a recall on the wheels. Its seems that on some rigs they got a little carried away on the thickness of the paint on the drums and had a build up on the surface that maches to the wheels. They removed the wheels and cleaned any paint from the wheels and the drums where the wheels touch, then reinstall the wheel and retourqe. On the forth wheel I had to watch how it was done and then sign a ststment that they showed me how to tourqe the wheels. All in all it went well except for the part when I saw the kid hitting the tourqe wrench with a hammer [not good] he said that it was not working well [I wonder why?] I gave him my wrench but the boss came out and said not to use mine. Well they went back to thiers and the next thing I heard was oh Sh.t I looked over and the tourqe wrench is in pieces on the pavement, so they had to go out and get a new wrench witch made me feel better as I did not trust a tourqe wrench that was feeling the busness end of a hammer.
Well see you all at the Rally

Mel,
You mean everyone doesn't use the Hammer Torque process! Wow! I suspect if you hadn't seen it with your own eyes you wouldn't have believed it! That is just nuts. But glad it worked out.

Mel between the wheel and the hub it's a practice of mine to use anti-seize (cooper coat)To keep the two from bonding together. I also use it on the truck hubs. I saw a guy last week with a flat on his truck he was kicking the heck out of that wheel to break it loose. I don’t use it on the lug bolts but some do, if you do it will affect the torque setting.

Old saying in the mechanic shop: "torque it down until it strips...then back it off a 1/4 turn..."! A hammer on what...? Wonder if that is one of those "Factory-Certified Technician Course" shortcuts.

Having been an Auto Tech. most of my life and then a Dealership Service Manager. I just can't seem to get my head around the the concept of hammering a torque wrench. More than that I can't beleive the "Boss" let the kid stay working there. That"kid" has no business even touching a wrench. WOW. I am so glad they went out and got a new one, now we just have to hope he knew how to use it Unreal!!! Where ever you had that done, I would suggest you avoid going back, unless they have better and smarter Tech's. to work on your rig.
Good Luck

Don Yes I think it might have been that dealer but with a new place in Marysville. The Trailer needs to go back in for the slides. I will have a talk with the service mang. about their work.

melnjoy,

I was the first recall done at that location, just a few days before you.

I've purchased a good torque wrench, and I plan on checking occasionally to ensure that the torque maps into the requirements.

FYI: I called the recall Hotline today. They said we could take our trailers to any Keystone Dealer.

Ofcourse we will unlikely hear the old, "YOU DIDN'T BUY IT HERE", run around!

They will also be looking into the above mentioned problem in Burlington

campbud,
It was 2004 Montana VIN's 506060-510774, 2004 Everest VIN's 481499-483328 and 2005 Everest VIN's 483329-484888. I hope this information helps answer your question.

GOOD JOB! I took my trailer to the Dealer in Tacoma, more than Happy to DO the WORK! I MUST say, "It was the MOST PLEASANT experience, in 30+ years of RVing, I have had with a Dealer Service Dept! The Service Writer was waiting at the Gate, I arrived a little late due to Road Construction, and showed me where to leave unit and assisted me unhooking. Then took me to Parts Dept. and Service Dept. to introduce me to Mgrs. Got my cell # so he could contact me when finished. When I came back early he made sure I had some coffee and was comfortable in the waiting area. Lastly he helped hook-up and provided very good directions on how to use the back way to Narrows Bridge to avoid the Rush-hour Traffic. It took me less than 20 mins to get on the bridge, if I went I-5 to bridge it could of taken an hour. THEY were ALL PROESSIONALS, that I delt with there!
