Assistance for a Friend
My neighbor here at the campground has a SOB 5th wheel and last night they had a strong oder in the camper and they had to vacate it for the night. He said it smelled like a strong sewer smell. He mentioned he had a headache today from it. My wife and I also noted a strong sewer smell earlier last evening outside between their 5th wheel and ours. It lasted outside for about 10 minutes and than disipated. He flushed his tanks real good tonight and so far the oder has not returned.
Anyone have any suggestions on what it might be and a fix?

Did it smell like rotten eggs? Maybe propane leak.

Check the battery(ies). A sulphated battery can give off a God-awful smell. Also feel them to see if they're hot to the touch.

X2 on the batteries, that's usually not something that occurs to folks.

Thanks for the tip, I will pass it on to him in the morning to check his batteries. I never thought of that either.
As for the Propane...He checked all of his connections on the propane system today and it was all tight and no leaks.
Thanks guys!

If the smell goes away with flushing of the tanks maybe they aren't using enough water during a flush. There's a tendency to think that when the "stuff" leaves the bowl, then it's time to release the flush lever. One must add plenty of water to keep things fluid, help any chemicals or additives do their job and prevent "permanent" adhesion of effluent to get stuck to the tank interior. Keeping in mind that if not enough water is used it could be a while before one uses the sensors to know when to flush. Using plenty of water helps prevent a long term stink.
Sorry about being so graphic, but I have been next to RVs that stunk like that. It's no fun on a hot summer day when the wind is blowing our direction.
Of course there are other things to check like blocked vents, or other things like what was mentioned by others.

I am thinking vent as well, but checking the batteries is worth remembering.
My thoughts is it could be the air is pushing down through the vent pipe occasionally instead of up and out. He may try one of those venturi type caps on the vent pipe that moves with the breeze.

Good posts, here is another thought; Overfill of tank, overflow on tank and 'up side' of bottom cover this will stink like sewer and sewer gas until it evaporates, ask them if they just dumped the tanks and ask if they were really full.
Run the furnace as much as they can to dry the underside, if that is the problem, and if the furnace blows air into the bottom like ours does..
I wish them well..
Just re-read the post, they did flush. bet that is what happened..

Here's something else to check:
We encountered a situation like that a few years ago. A very strong sewer smell in and around our rig that would come and go. After much investigation we discovered that another unit up wind from us always left his drain valves open and when other units nearby dumped their tanks it it would force sewer gas back through his rig and out the roof vent. As soon as we convinced him he was the problem the smell was gone. This can happen if a sewer drain hose isn't attached well to the camp connection also. I think it happens if the campgrounds sewer system is poorly vented or is getting full.

If a strong bad sewer odor is present, it contains methane gas. It's no wonder you had a headache. One time our black water tank leaked and the underbelly covering was coated with you know what. It also gave off methane gas which when everything was repaired we never had that problem again.

I talked with him today and the oder was gone after flushing his black tank and has not returned. He noticed their toilet bowl was not holding water in the bowl, it slowly drains out through the night. He cleaned the seal around the ball valve and it seems to be holding water a little better now. I mentioned he might have the seal changed out anyways just to be sure it fixes the problem.
The Mystery Continues..........

Do the simple things first....easy enough to check the batteries and propane, After that take a hose up on the roof and run water down the vent pipe and make sure it is going into the tank. All kinds of stuff could block it and cause sewer smell to back up into the cabin. If it overflowed into the underbelly you would think the smell would have stayed but easy enough to pull a fell screws and take a look. Or could have been just the empty toilet bowl and conditions where right for air to come down the vent instead of making like a chimney and flowing out.

He is going to check the vent when it stops raining. So far NO more oder, his propane system has no leaks and his batteries are not hot & are ok. We have narrowed it down to the bowl running dry and letting oder come back into the cabin. Checking the vent is scheduled for the next dry sunny day.
Thanks everyone for helping me assist my neighbor with SOB. Just goes to show MOC Members lend a hand to anyone in need no matter what brand they have!!
Well Done!!

Replacing the seal(s) in that bowl is fairly simple. He probably should look for the seals now. I replaced mine last year, and had to shop around to find them.

If it was the batteries it would hydrogen sulfide gassing off, which smells like rotten eggs.

It may not be the seal. Many RV's use the Seeland bowls and there is a repair kit that has a stronger spring that lets the ball close tighter.
Anyhow, thanks for your good deed. Payback will be sweet.
