Double Towing Weight
Hey all, my 2021 3121rl has towing capacity of 3000 pounds. Has anybody towed a double more than the recommended Towing weight?

I don't know what the hitch receiver and its connections to the frame look like on the 2021 models, but the frame connections on the "cargo" hitch on my 3790RD was not impressive even if I put on a bike rack. I ended up adding an additional 2" tube across the back end of the 12" frame wide flange beams (I-beams for you non-engineer types). I've towed a few thousand miles with around 3000# with no issues. Could I go higher?? I'd say yes as long as the tongue weight stayed in the 300-500# range.

We actually towed a Chevy HHR behind the Mobile Suites we owned before. I did in fact add (welded) on supports. Never had and issue. Towed the HHR all over the West, and east. Stopped one time for being over length, courtesy ticket given. This was in Kansas, I was 75' long. Frieghtliner was the tow vehicle.
Happy trails.

I talked to a man who had a Mobile Suites. He was carrying a large BMW motorcycle on the back of the camper and told me it was designed to carry a thousand pounds. I wouldn’t try that with our campers.

D Suites campers are far and away built to a higher standard the the OP's Montana camper. The D suite frame is a triple stack of 8" tubing in comparison the the Montana's 12" I beam. To suggest to the OP that he may be ok to tow because it's been done in a D suite may not be the best advice. The typical weight limit listed in Keystone products brochure is 300 lbs. Without some modification to the rear hitch platform, a 300 lb limit should be adhere to.

You did notice I said a Mobile Suites, no were did I say, the Montana had the capability, as the MS. I would never tell anyone it is ok. I posted what I did, and with the equipment I used. Common Sense is the Key! Also the Freightliner was very capable of towing the MS, and the Chevy HHR.
The Mobile Suites was a Custom build, 5th wheel. Went to factory sat with the engineers and the mobile Suites was our (wife) design inside, later DRV factory added lot of the idea's my wife gave them. That was back in 2009/2010, Mobile Suites was sold since then. As I have said I only drive the Truck.
Happy trails.

Yes I certainly did notice that. I pointed out that a Mobile Suites isn’t a Montana. What you can do with a Mobile Suites you can’t do with a Montana.

Never seen a Montana towing a car, but have seen many Montana's towing Golf carts and Harley Davison's, during are travels thru 44 States, Canada and Mexico.
Happy trails.

I’m towing 3k.
2020 was the 1st year Montana modified their hitches ON SOME models to the 3K limit while some models still have a class II receiver rated at 300 lbs because of frame construction.

No problem with Freedlm Hauler and not double towing.

Firestation12 the Mobile Suites does not have a triple 8” frame unless they changed recently. Yes their frame is way stronger than the Montana along with the whole unit being a way higher end fiver. The frame is two 6” tubes along with a 3” tube for a total of 15”. It appears the smaller tube is actually a heavier wall thickness. We should also remember that they usually have 17.5” tires, oil bath hubs, disk brakes and 8K pound independent suspension. Yes I will admit that I really would love to have a DRV.
Happy and safe roads to you.

A hitch on the rear of a Montana rated to tow 3k? Never seen that before and seriously doubt that exists. I can not believe Lippert would do that. That's only asking for trouble.

The new Keystone generic 2021 owner's manual addresses trailer towing/
hitches starting on page 37. They list 3000# as maximum allowed and a 300# limit on tongue weight..

And my manual says on Page 30
"If you do not have a Keystone factory installed hitch receiver, do not tow anything
behind your RV. The RV frame and bumper are not designed for towing.
A hitch equipped for trailer towing will have tabs to hang the safety chains and
there will be a bracket for the trailer wiring plug. There should also be a label on the
hitch stating maximum towing capacity"
Mine has a 2" recever, gives a generic rating of 300 lbs but has none of the required parts or chain connection holes . So mine is just a bike rack carrier I suppose. 2018 RD

I had the stock hitch removed. Replaced with a hitch welded to the frame designed to 5k, as I planned on flat towing my 4k 2 door jeep. The company I used specialized in doing these type of mods on trailers, motor homes, etc. From day 1 my set up had no issues at all. Pulled my jeep behind the 5er all over the western states.

Your probably not protected from the alterer's actions without documentation.

One big reason not to exceed the tow rating is that insurance will often not cover a claim if you have exceeded the GWVR or the tow rating. Also, endangering others by towing a vehicle/camper that is not only a triple tow but clearly over the weight limit is hardly fair.

I've seen photos of results and know a person near me who split their Montanas apart up front near the fifth wheel hitch towing too much weight.
