When we were on the move our Coleman Roadtrip got a lot of use but we also did a lot of charcoal where the parks had grills or fire rings at the site. Granted the Coleman is a bit of a pain to get in and out of a compartment and to clean. About every third or fourth trip we were taking it to a car wash which probably wasn't a good idea but was about the only way to really clean it good.

First thing I bought when we went stationary (till I retire that is) was go to Sams club and buy a monster 5 burner SST propane grill. Boy was that a mistake. The grill cooks fine but it is WAY TO BIG for just the two of us. Looking to get a Magna grill like they use on boats for our everyday use.

We also bought an electric smoker that has an app so you can monitor remotely. That thing is great!

When we get on the road again we will review this thread as the smoker and 5 burner will stay at home. I'm thinking a Magma propane grill and a small Blackstone griddle might be the ticket. Doesn't take much surface for just the two of us.

Had the Coleman Road trip they are garbage poor construction cheap materials and cook way to hot.

We carry two:

1 Kamado Joe Jr we use for anything that takes more then 20 min to cook, it is a small version of a Green Egg designed to be portable. Also makes amazing brick oven pizza.

2. We carry a Blackstone 22" which is one of the best constructed grills I have EVER owned, we use the Blackstone for 74% of our cooking and sometimes use both the Kamado and the Blackstone together on meals. However the beauty of the blackstone is it is so easy to clean. Walmart has the best deals on the Blackstone 22" with stand and lid for $175 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Blackston...Hose/179647360

I use a Smoke Hollow Vector Smoking Grill. It has a built in wood chip smoke box with it's own burner. It is propane fired and really adds smoke flavor to whatever you are grilling. I also have a Lodge cast iron griddle that I place on the grill grate for burgers. I haven't tried just smoking anything on it yet.

The problem with MOST small camping BBQ is they are so compact the burners are too close to the grill grates and there is little or no room to move the food to an indirect location. Also with the close proximity of the burners to the food all food will take on a slight propane taste and smell (some more than others).

Direct flame is ONLY for searing to preserve flavor you need to cook indirect meaning no line of sight food to flame. let it be known you cannot smoke anything with direct flame cooking. Best tasting food comes from Charcoal, or Pellets like used in a Traeger where the wood is the heat source. For searing and indirect the Blackstone is probably the most universal grill as there is no direct flame exposure and the cast iron solid griddle when seasoned manifest incredible flavor from your foods. However it is one of the few small grills that allow you to easily cook both direct (through griddle) and indirect. Cooking with wood/charcoal trumps all.

Try this on most camp BBQ's

Most Webers are good however the Go-Anywhere is a piece of junk. Blows out with the slightest breeze and low BTU output. Wish I wouldn't have bought one...

its a Ford Chevy thing,
tough to get anything as good as at home with the big stuff.
what I found was the GMC Davey Crocket does a lot, I like its St.ST. customer service was excellent on an issue I had. I also carry a 22 Blackstone and an electric pressure cooker.
between the 3 I can get pretty close to what I can do at home.
good luck and enjoy

We've go a Kuuma 125 that we absolutely love. It's almost two years old and shows no signs of deterioration whatsoever.

My Weber "Go-Anywhere" propane grill is light, inexpensive, cooks well, takes up little space. I connect it to my bulk tanks with a quick disconnect hose so I don't have to card around disposable propane bottles.

what is it that you don't like about the treager? lots of little tricks to get them dialed in. smoked ribs on ours yesterday and they were just fantastic.

Weber Q with the griddle plate on the left side. I use the griddle for my breakfast most mornings and to sear my steaks. The best of both worlds in a nice little bundle.

I use a small barrel style grill. I think it's a New Braunfels. A little charcoal with small pieces of oak for smokey flavor. Food is always cooked on or in foil. I put foil down before the charcoal and oak. Very easy clean up. Nothing gets on the grill. I let the coals burn out over night and roll the ashes up in the foil. The little smoker is always clean and sits in the front compartment when traveling. Better food than most restaurants!

Whatever Grill you choose, get a grill mat and cut it to fit. I leave mine a little long so the ends turn up to retain juices. Sauté vegetables while finishing meats; cook pancakes on your grill. Cleanup with brush and Simple Green. Rarely have to deep clean the portable gas grill.

I like grilling and use a smoker so we carry a Char-Griller charcoal grill with wood box on the side. Burgers, chicken, ribs, Boston Butt...
Load the grill onto the cargo rack on the back of the camper. With a cast iron griddle on the grill for breakfast, my wife cooks the bacon better than at home.

We have a Weber Baby Q and a Green Mountain Davey Crocket. Can’t beat the smoked foods on the GMG and our Weber has been with us for many trouble free years.

I agree with those folks who use a Kamado grill of some kind, my best friend has a HUGE Green Egg at his home, and we have had some great cook outs with it, but it ways about 400LBS, lol. We do have a Weber Q, and used it for years, but I really missed the charcoal flavor, finally decided on a Char Griller Akorn Jr. Same cooking method as the Egg or any other Kamado type grill, kinda like an old wood stove, with a "flue" on top, and dampers on the bottom, once you get used to where to put them for different meats etc, really easy. Has a cast iron grate, I just wire brush it occasionally, or crank the heat up and burn residue off, have had it for several years, we like it so much we are going to get a bigger one for the house. It will hit 700 degrees in no time, using lump charcoal, close the vents, will go out and have plenty charcoal for the next cook, just right size for my DW and I, two big T-bones, really good beer can chicken, and cedar planked salmon that will MAKE YOUR TONGUE JUMP UP AND LAP YOUR BRAINS OUT!!!! LOL, only weighs about 30 lbs, I stick it in the front compartment of the Monty along with a bag of lump. Would also advise buying the smoking stone, I use it for almost everything except steak, for indirect heat and longer smokes. For the inch steaks, no stone, takes 6 min @ 550 degrees! DELICIOUS! Also highly recommend Dizzy Pig seasonings, will try to post a little pic, had trouble last time, just my 10 cents!!, lol
