8e3k0...nope it is clean ..Finger comes away clean, no trace of soot. Was at the dealer today asking about the longer regen's as we were getting them every 200 or so miles up until the last computer flash. Service tech said that was normal and the latest flash extended the time between regens. Check with your dealer on the latest TSB's.

Montana Sky, have the dealer run the VIN number before you sign on the dotted line for any recalls. There is a recall on the fuel injectors for premature wear. Would not like to see anyone broke down a long way From home…don’t ask me how I know!!!!

Thanks Oldguard...I'll be sure and have them check the VIN out before buying.

What can anyone tell me about the 3:55 rear end instead of the 3:73? I test drove one in Spokane with the 3:55. The sales guy tells me I will get better mileage with this over the 3:73, but this truck wont be as quick off the line as the 3:73. I felt this truck has plenty of pep; however, I am more concerned with towing ability than empty pep. I feel i would rather have the 3:73 over the 3:55 or 4:10. Opinions??

The rear end should determine the GCWR...the higher the number the rear end, the higher the GCWR. Find the GCWR for the each truck and subtract the truck's weight, and you'll have your tow rating. If you wanted to 'worse' case it, use the max GW of the truck.

I hate to be the one that gives negative comments but we have an 08 crew dually King Ranch Chrome with 3.73 gears. It runs terrible. Can't keep up with traffic empty. Regens constantly. Fuel economy empty 12-12.5 @70, 8-8.5 towing @60-62. Been back to two different dealers and can't find anything wrong. We traveled from Yuma Az to El Paso Tx with Birdie and Jean last winter. They have a crew dually with 3.73 gears and a 7.3 diesel stock and we couldn't keep up. Same year and model trailer but theirs is a Big Sky. When we filled up they took three plus gallons less than ours. I'm glad that most everyone elses run great but we're not satisfied with ours at all. Ford customer service won't offer any help either. We had our prior 7.3 Ford for 13 years and never had a problem with it. Hope all goes well for you.

Dealers are only as good as their technical ability in the shop. If their not willing to ensure the techs are trained and updated on systems including electronics and computers you'll get a alibi that it can't be fixed. My 09 dually with 3.73 gears runs great and ran great from the time we purchased it and now. What I did not like was all the restrictions on the exhaust system, hi turbo pressure, and a regen that had to literally burn hat soot out every 200 miles or less. Fuel mileage was way down compared to our previous 7.3s. We made a change to the Spartan tuner and I just love that truck even more now. I can at least monitor, engine oil temp, trans oil temp, turbo psi, engine coolant temp, multi exhaust temps from turbo inlet to outlet, inclusive of exhaust temps. These are actual readings and not indicators that come with the truck. You can track, graph your power train performance. There is something like 1000 plus points you can select from to monitor or watch. There is also alarm settings for each, and then a high limit you can set where the computer will defuel to protect your engine or tranny from any damage. Ultra technology that Ford has built in but did not allow the owner to see or use. Our fuel mileage has already jumped 2,5 to 3 miles to the gallon calculated while towing 15,00 to 16000 lbs. I know of guys that dumped/ traded off their new 08/09 6.4 liter trucks mainly because of fuel mileage and power characteristics. I felt the same way and thought I would have been better off with a Freightliner, Pete or Kenworth when I stopped to refuel. There are guys that are getting in the 6 to 7 miles per gallon with the 4.30 gears and pulling up to 20,00 lb loaded trailers. Not good and I can understand the frustration with some owners of the 08/09 6.4 diesels.

tbhd2,

I agree with the above post, the dealership is only as good as the service techs. That's why I drive almost a hundred miles to have work done @ Woodhouse Ford in Blair, NE. They have 40-50 service bays and 90% of what they sell is Super duty trucks with a majority of them burning diesel. I have been very satisfied with there service even when I first started going down there with a truck I purchased somewhere else. Since then it's the only place I let open the hood. If you are ever in that area check them out they will get you running better. And "NO" I don't work for Woodhouse. Just a very satisfied customer.

Rich:

I just purchased a 2009 350 this weekend. (some good info on my search under the "Mountain Pulling" discussion. Average MGP new, all freeway, no pulling, is coming in a little over 16 (a whopping 380 miles!). If you are tracking low-end acceleration, watch the rear-end ratio. I saw a lot of 3.31 configured 2010s out there. The latest option sheet I saw indicated that the 3.73 was not avail in the SRW configuration which is why we picked up a new 2009 - plus some better rebate $ on the 09s. Also, Ford claims that the Cetane additive that a lot of owners of the prior PS engine say Ford recommends, is not needed for the 6.4.

Good Luck in your negotiations!

Montana Sky: Regarding your question on the rear differential -- with the 3.55 it looks like you lose 2500 lbs total GVRW over the 4:10 axle; in an extended cab; true crew cab not as much but still lose load capacity. The other thing is how much do you run empty (i.e. not towing). The 4:10 would be best when towing, the 3.55 best when not towing for MPG; that said, I heard the local Ford dealer telling a customer that the 3:73 was the best 'all-around' choice for both if you have a good mix of driving.

Now, having said all that, I remember reading that Ford (and the other makers as well) are going to the lower number (3.55 or such) to increase the overall mileage to meet CARB rules (I believe that is the right acronym).

Thanks all for your help on this. Monday night I pulled the trigger and now have a new tow vehicle. The first 500 miles have been added and the truck appears to be averaging 15 MPG. Will have to wait and see how it hand calculates when I hit the fuel pump this weekend.

Thanks again.

We just got an e-mail from Ford about the 2010 F350 with the tow boss pkg and 4.1 that increases the Gross combined tow capacity to 26,000 lbs.. You can be sure that we will be looking at that one.

Of course any of the big three diesels will do the job, The big Ford will drive and feel different from the durimax but it is a awesome truck. We are now over 25K on our 08 F-350.. 9/11 pulling the 3400 and 15/17 solo. We had the 3400 weighed here at the fall rally and it weighed in at 15,840lbs..[:O]

Lindy,

I bought an F350 Super Duty King Ranch. The truck is at the dealer having all the "extras" added to it. I pick it up tomorrow night and will try to send a few photos this weekend...I am still waiting to see the interior photos of your new coach by the way.

Dave Congratz on the new King Ranch, I'm sure you will like the Ford. Dave check the web site Delaine and some pic the other night. We are in Nashville Tn at Two River Camp grounds at our Eastern Region Rally. Going to CW Monday morning to get the hitch mounted on Delaine's Chevy HHR will be towing it behind the 5th wheel. Delaine had a little show and tell on the 5er to show all the changes and Mods on the 5er that our manufactor did, there isn't another one like it yet, but they will be some similar. Again good luck with the King Ranch. Looking forward to the Pic. GBY....

Just filled up the truck last night and it averaged out at 15.2 mpg. Truck now has 635 miles on it and I'm sure it will get better over the next 10,000 miles. The Powerstroke is nowhere near as quick off the line as my Duramax, but I love how this Super Duty sticks to the road at 80 mph in heavy winds. I also noticed it turns 2,000 RPM's at 78 MPH; almost 400 RPM's lower than my Duramax at same speeds.
