Is this true?

Yes, that's true. I looked into it for my 2012. Not sure about the newest models. But it does seem that since these trucks are so often used as tow vehicles for RVing that having the option to update the OEM GPS with the RV friendly logic that's used in the Garmin (and others) would be offered. I thought that the Navigation in the UConnect system in my RAM was powered Garmin. Seems like it should be easy to be able to purchase an update for RVing. It would be nice to have that mapping without an extra device.

Sadly yes. I have the built in GPS as well as an older RV specific Garmin GPS. I almost NEVER use the built in unit. It doesn't even have some streets or roads and knows nothing about RV's.

My Garmin 785 and the Nav in my GM agree pretty much, but not always, but there is no way I can modify the route on the GM, but I can modify my route on the Garmin and do it all the time. Where most GPS units will route you through the middle of major cites on the main route, I prefer to use their bypass if available and my Garmin will let me alter the route to the bypass. Plus the height, weight, and total length are all programmed into the Garmin.

Many of us get by fine without a dedicated RV GPS.

So do you have your set up to route you the fastest way or the shortest route I just order the Garmin 785 and I'm suppose to get it by next week?

Your best bet is to ask your Ford dealer what the latest version of their nav system will do. It changes regularly. Then there are the occasional $149 updates after paying over 1000 dollars for their system!! Not going to happen with one of our cars. This upsets me more then the lack of RV specific data points since my old $350 Garmin RV760 LMT has 'lifetime' updatess as a part of the price.

Sparatacus, I generally set it for fastest as the shortest will use lots of smaller roads, but I like the Garmin because I can zoom in on the route and redirect the way I want to go.

Thank you, I just received mines the other day, I'm still playing with it and so far I love it.

I still use my "old" DeLorme mapping software. Yes the most recent maps are not available but our wandering travel days are over. So driving the same route from San Antonio to Colorado is not much of a challenge. We also carry Garmin and phones with mapping capabilities. I have often wondered why the Big 3 did not install Garmin systems in their vehicles as an option. Not really--it is MONEY NOT service or convenience. (just got a note from Forum my message was to short! Really!)(need to add 6 characters!)

Google maps on the iPhone, connect to the infotainment system via Apple Play. Turn by turn directions, and no other accessories, extra screens or added expense. Automatic updates too.

Garmin RV1090

We purchased a Garmin RV1090. its a very nice unit, but way too big for our F350. I had to get very creative to mount it. It couldn't go in the center, it blocked everything. Not on the dash as I couldn't see the road. I had to drill and mount a Panavise ball to the top of the dash above he driver side vent. with a 4" arm it worked out surprisingly well. The only negative is the navigator cant really see it, but with the mag base it has I can pull it off quickly and give it to her. I also mounted my Haloview 7" monitor to a can sized plug of UHMW I machined to fit the drink holder on the fold down center seat and it rides there. Now where to go with TPMS? I am very quickly running out of real-estate! And I have not even considered the HAM radio yet. Oh my!

That's why it's called an RV GPS. We use a Garmin 770 and it has served us well.
