We'd be in for a rally in Alaska next summer. Good luck with your continuing adventure.

Please be sure to let us know when you're here. We'll have dinner, at the very least. Where is the rally?

Wow, and I thought we were tough for living year-round in our Monty here in New Jersey! Howdy for the first time and welcome back! Hope you have an uneventful Winter!

It's so nice to have you guys back (although you never really left us, and thank you for that!). We'll be setting up for deep winter camping, too, shortly after Labor Day. Getting caught in a September blizzard when we weren't skirted and hunkered down several years ago was a real learning experience. Let's hope we both have an uneventful winter with NO problems!

We'll be back in the rig on Wednesday. The movers are coming Saturday to put the house contents in storage. I cannot wait! And the sooner winter gets here the happier I'll be.

Bernie and Tammy,
Just curious on how you find the cost of living up there as compared to the lower 48?
Do you specific examples of things that are considerably more and also things that are the same or less?
Thanks,
Les

Les, the cost of living up here is higher than the lower 48, but it depends on where you live. If you live in the bush (off the road system) things are outrageous. For example, when we moved to Alaska in 2005 we lived in Bethel 40 miles from the Bering Sea. A gallon of orange juice in 2005 cost $20, milk was close to $8 a gallon and a pack of toilet paper (4 regular size rolls, double ply) was $10 a pack. However, Anchorage (we live in the Valley just about 40 miles north) prices are more in line with the lower 48 economy. We pay about $5 or $6 for a gallon of orange juice. For fuel we pay $4.10 for my car (it requires premium) and for diesel for Bernie's truck we're about $4.30 a gallon. The farther you get outside of Anchorage the higher the prices. Overall, things are higher, especially groceries. We do have Sam's and Costco and we make wise purchases there to help with grocery costs.
Traveling is expensive no matter where you are just because everything is so far away. Utilities are again dependent on where you live. If you live in the bush, you're going to be paying for electricity provided by diesel generators. That gets expensive quickly. Our electric bill in Bethel averaged $900 a month. By comparison, our average electric bill in Anchorage was about $100 a month. Our electric bill here at the campground last month (we pay monthly site rent and electric) was only $76 -- and we don't conserve and I have a washer/dryer.
Living here is much more expensive than anything we experienced while living in Georgia, but I'll happily pay the prices for the pleasure of seeing the beauty of Alaska every single day! Tammy
