Tips on cleaning the awning
Yep, that time again. I hate cleaning those black spots off of the bottom side of the awning every year. What I normally do is put on some goggles, a jacket and a hat (lots of stuff falls back on you) and spray it from underneath with black spot remover and sometimes some "409". I then wait a few minutes and scrub it with a broom or sponge mop, then rinse with water. Is there an easier way? How hard is it to take the awning off of the rig and clean it that way? -Glenn

I do about the same thing, but I let the awning hang down at an angle and get behind it. Still messy, but less so.

I seem to remember that there are cleaning instructions with the awning documentation. I remember a mild bleach concentration in water that is spread on, the awning is then retracted and allowed to soak for a few minutes, then extended and wiped down. Don't hold me to the bleach mixture, but I am sure there are instructions on the Carefree and Dometic web-sites.

I mix bleach and water 50/50. Spray it on, hose it off. Sometimes I rub the tougher spots with my brush I wash the coach with.

Bleach/water mixture or tilex works. Do not roll it up or your freshly waxed side will streak and your wife will make serious fun of you.

This past weekend I tried a mixture of dawn, bleach and water. Brushed it on and rolled up earning for 30 minutes then unrolled. Not one spot was gone. Repeated and left rolled up for 4 hours. Same result. Will try tiles this weekend.

I buy the awning cleaner from WalMart, dilute it according to instructions, brush it on underneath and on top with a long handled brush, roll it up for 15 minutes or so, then unroll and spray clean. Sometimes a bit more brushing is required. Looks really good except for a thin line along the very top where it joins the camper.

This is the "hard" way, but that's how I usually end up doing things. When cleaning the roof(w/blue Dawn) I'll soak the extended awning with blue Dawn/water mixture(I never use bleach, personal preference), roll up the awning, wait 15 min, extend, clean w/soft brush on extension pole, rinse. Then when I'm done up top I go down and clean the bottom of the awning in the same manner. Sometimes there are stubborn stains. On these I use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser mop and a bucket of clean water. In the winter while camped for extended periods in Florida, The underside of the awning will sometimes get some blacks spots(mold/mildew). The eraser mop, a bucket of clean water, and 15 min of work will clean it up like new. It's a lot of work and will give your shoulders a workout kinda like pulling ceilings down with a pike pole! But it works well and I haven't seen any adverse affects from it yet in over 15 years of doing it this way(besides sore shoulders and a loud calling from Mr. Brewski). The eraser pads used to be only available in small pads, now available in a mop.

I've found the mold/mildew remover from the dollar store works great. Spray it on, wait about five minutes and wash with long handle brush.

I have a sprayer for my hose that has a reservoir that hold about 8 oz of solution. I put 50/50 mix of Blue Dawn and bleach. Wet the awning down with water and let the excess run off. Then I use the hose sprayer to spray the Blue Dawn/Bleach solution on the top and bottom of the awning. Roll it up for about 15 minutes. Unroll it and rinse, if needed I repeat the process. I very rarely have to do any scrubbing.
