6 Tire Trip!
We are about 320 miles from San Antonio to complete a 10,000+ mile trip to the Northeast and Maritime Canada. I just got 2 new tires for the truck. For this trip, I have replaced 6 tires--all 4 on the truck and 2 on the trailer. The truck tires were going past 3 years and 45,000 miles--they were ready. Bad luck on the trailer tire--a big bolt through one and another was 3+ years and a belt slipped. So, I am really setting up for a great trip next year!
Fortunately, I caught all 6 before any blowouts or other failures while towing--it sure pays to look over the tires.

Glad you caught the problem, it does pay to do a good walk-around often.
Stay safe out there.

Sorry you had to buy them, but glad that you found out before you had major problems.

It does make you feel like it is worth a "walk around" regardless of how fast you want to hit the road--when I can get down the road safely. It is interesting that when I check my records I am always amazed that how time flies by between major purchases like tires! I thought I bought them about 2 years ago--missed a year with alot of fun traveling.

I will be doing a bunch of miles next year. So, this winter, I am budgeting (is that the right word?) to put new tires on my TV. That is X6. The spare hasn't been used and won't be changed. The other 6 are enough to make my wallet scream.
P. S. I put new tires on the Monty last year in Bakersfield. They are still good. That was almost a $1,000. AAAAAAAaaagh!!!!

A stop & walk around where you not only bump the tires but feel for heat not only in the tires , but also in the brake drum. (It helps your legs also) I like to stop about every 100 miles.

Look at the price on 255/80Rx22.5 tires. Two of them will cost a $1000.
When one considers that the safety involved in the 4, 6, 8, 10, etc., tires on the surface are life saving devices, price does not seem to be an object.
p.s, Tim and Susan, maybe we can have a face-to=face if we get up Fort Sam way again soon. Glad you had a safe trip.

I look at the tires on the Monty every time that we stop somewhere, including rest stops. It is just a habit of mine and something I have always done. Over cautious I guess.

I don't just look, but I also take their temperature when we stop. An inexpensive inferred thermometer can make that check on tires, bearings and brakes without having to bend over. That works especially well for those of you, like me, who may have paid for your college education with your back and your knees.

I am with DQ, that infared gun will give you a very good picture of what is going on. You still need to get a good visual at every stop.

I use the TST which tells me instant pressure and temp as we travel. Even if they are not real accurate they let you know if there is a change.

I blew out two of the original Goodyear Marathons that came on the trailer so my motto now is check those bad boys every chance I get. I use a small IR thermometer (KINTREX IRT0401 Compact Waterproof (IP67) Infrared Thermometer) $19.00 bucks from Amazon to check temps at fuel, potty stops ect, pretty cool and check inflation every morning while traveling.
