Orlando to St. Pete/Madeira Beach, FL
How are the driving conditions from Orlando to St. Pete/Madeira Beach, Fl? Have never been down this way w/RV - how are the road conditions. Where are the traffic jams? Have always flown into St. Pete & drove rental car to Madeira Beach but it's been a long time. Any good campground suggestions for these areas? We would like to be close to John's Pass near Treasure Island/Madeira Beach but probably won't find a campground there. All suggesions will be appreciated.

It is about 105 miles on I-4 west. I-4 is a good interstate and traffic can be heavy around Orlando and the Theme Parks but it is usually a good ride.We are not familiar with CG's in the St Pete area.

Check out the Ft Desoto county park. The CG is out on the peninsula with the fort. It is a little tight getting in and out but the CG is nice. Google the CG and check for reservations. It is very hard to get a reservation, but it is worth a try.
The only other one I am aware, is the St Pete/Madiera KoA. Now this one is very tight to get in and out and it is pretty expensive.

Right now most all CGs in Pinellas County have vacancies. Getting a site should not be a problem most any where.
Although I personally wouldn't recommend it, There is the St Pete/Madeira KOA and it should have vacancies.
The fuel costs and the economy have hit the snowbirds hard. There is no CG in this area that has a NO Vacancy sign hanging outside. Avalon RV Resort is usually full this time of year. Last count we had over 20 vacant sites. Even Superbowl weekend we had plenty of room.

We just left the Tampa area and the Good Parks are full, the others you can find sites. Ft Desoto has no sites avail. We are in Panama City and sites are available. We stopped in Ocala and looked at the Grand Lake RV resort, no vacancy nice park, we had stayed there in 2005 on our way to Key West. This was our first winter in Florida. If we were to come back we would go on down to South Florida. We didn't care for Central Florida we have stayed on the Alantic side of Florida and we liked those areas on down to the Keys. We will go West next winter. GBY...

Well I don't what is considered a Good Park in your book but I know for a fact that there are a number of RV parks west of Tampa near the Gulf Coast that have vacancies. The park we are currently in has vacancies but we are about 12 miles north of Madeira Beach.
As far as Ft Desoto, being full is pretty much a fact of life down here. Especially this time of year. The further south you go in Florida the higher the rates. Around Key West they probably run over 65 to 75 bucks a night or higher.
