GPS Vehicle Tracking Device

HI: Is it possible to install some kind of tracking device on an RV, in the unlikely event that it would be stolen, while we were away for a couple of days,or has anyone ever thought about doing something like that? I know this might sound like a crazy question, but I know that there are some techies on this forum that might know if this is a possibility. Happy camping and I will meet some of you at the rally.

That Lojack sounds pretty impressive. You can even get a warning when someone is trying to move your vehicle.
I looked for a cost and didn't see one, something tells me it isn't cheap. Any idea of the price of such a service?

I am certainly learning alot from everyone on this forum. Thanks for all the good ideas. I will check out lojack and see if it would work on an RV. It could be a good idea, if it is not too expensive. We shall see. Maybe someone else has an idea that might also work to find a stolen RV.

Here is the Disney company's cell phone answer to your question on GPS tracking.
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/Techn...1808838&page=1

There are commercial services available and the Ham Radio crew also has a solution similar to what you are interested in.

Let me tell you a short story. I had lo jack installed in one of my trucks.
I was living in a bad area of a city 19 years ago. Well it got stolen Friday night or early Saturday morning. Lo jack at that time was $400 dealer installed with the new vehicle purchase.
I called the local police. They had one patrol car equipped with the lo jack receiver (which was in an accident and in the body shop). Anyway they found it 2 days later in a school parking lot still running.

As it turns out I got a bad transponder and it never worked. Of course they had a money back guaranty. Yup they gave me my money back. Took the transponder out and we said good by. At least I saved a little on my insurance by having it. But there were no checks to verify that the unit worked after installation. (or this was overlooked).

Carol;

I called our provider, Alltel, and was told that Corporate is called and they can locate the phone by where it is in relation to the tower signal as long as the phone is powered on. She said it was used to find a group of hunters lost in KS. I'm not sure, but since this capability is, apparently, a Federal requirement, the phone may not even need to be activated, just powered up. The phone companies may take exception to being used as a lost and found service though.

I think I would have the phone charger plugged into a small inverter connected to the rv battery, all of it hidden. An external antenna may be needed also.

I knew you were clever Skip! Very interesting concept! Thanks

Yes, the newer phones are equipped with some kind of GPS, I remembered it the moment I read your post.

Super idea!

here is another service that is designed for this purpose.

http://www.thewitness.net/comparison.htm

They have a monthly fee of $6 bucks a month

But the unit cost $430. plus installation. It is designed more for auto's with things like remote door unlocking and other features.

Here is another http://www.gpsnorthamerica.com/index.asp
No info on their web site on cost. They do have a trailer unit, The battery is good for 5 years. Looks as if its geared towards the tractor trailer fleets though.

Then you can google it here:
