Frameless Window Broken

Our new 2019 Montana 3761FL was in secured storage for the last 3 weeks. When I went get it, the pane less window next to the dining room table was broken in a thousand pieces. It was not vandalism. It could have been by a weed eater but the lot owner said there has been no weed trimming around the RV. Has anyone had a window to break because of the heat? How about a crazy bird flying into the window? Any other causes? Very puzzling!

Frame-less windows have been known to shatter as well as just fall off. Any stress on their edges and breakage can occur. Others will probably join in with more personal knowledge.

if in warranty, give it shoot - some of those windows just fail. I had to change mine by dining table - had to change whole unit that dealer ordered. good luck

I have no idea how a paneless window could be broken. I thought their big selling point was that they are un breakable

Even steel breaks in the right condition - IMHO it is more of an appearance selling point

I'm a little confused. Are you talking about a frameless window?

Yes, frameless window. A paneless window would have no glass...interesting window.

These windows are all tempered glass...when they break it will be into a million pieces. Tempered glass is both stronger and more fragile at the same time. Tempered is used so that when it does break there aren't sharp knife-like shards of glass flying about. It's often called Safety Glass for that reason.

While T Glass can take a much harder hit to the flat surface without breaking, the edges can be more senstitive. A little nick can easily shatter it. I suppose that it's possible to catch a rock on the exposed edge of the glass in travel and have it break later. Who knows how it happened. It's just a bummer

the breakage issue, i heard, has to do with the finish on the glass and then heat causes the stress … I think

While heading home from the Fall Rally pulled into a truckstop for a little break and on our walk around we saw that the large frameless window above the dining room table was shattered. We know we didn't hit any thing but was told by one of the truckers at the truckstop told us he has seen this same exact thing happen while going down the highways because a trucker got just a little to close to the unit and the truckers side mirror just barely touched the edge of the window shattering it. There were no other marks on the side of the Monte but he told me he was sure that was what happened to our window. I know this is not your case but those windows are extremely fragile. Our parts manager at our local dealer has told me he could order the window BUT it would have to be the "complete window unit" not just the upper glass. He told me there is a very fine glass company here in the city that can cut and install an exact match to the broken one for about a fourth of the cost. So guess what I'm heading for in the next week or so. We sealed the window up with plastic coated cardboard and gorilla tape and it is stored in a shed at the farm so no moisture can get into the unit. The glass company carries the glass in stock so it should only take about a day to get it replaced and looking like normal again. Hope you can find a glass company in your area that can do the same thing and save you the cost of a whole new window.

Our RV Dealer is filing the claim under warranty as the Montana is only two months old and they think it broke because of the heat. We will see if Keystone covers it. If not, I'll find a good glass shop.

Sorry for the "Pane Less" glass wording. Thanks for making the correction to Frame less.

I have changed the Title of the Post to "Frameless" rather than "Paneless" to make the Topic clearer.

I guess, technically, if the glass broke out of the window that it actually is "paneless"

I lost the rearmost window on the entry door side for no apparent reason. Warranty is a joke so forked our the $400 for the entire unit as both CW and Keystone assured me there was NO WAY to replace the individual window and I would have to replace the entire window unit (frame and windows). What a Joke. I went around to several local glass companies which was a colossal waste of time. Bit the bullet and prepaid for the entire unit. After 3 weeks it finally arrived and I took it with me to install. Local CW wanted a few hundred labor.

Once I had the frame I found it could be taken apart by removing the screws at the top of the frame and sliding the windows forward off the frame. My window unit had a small window and an escape window. While taking the screws out of the existing frame I noticed the front window was pushed forward and it appeared that the center screw (which is pointed) was actually in contact with the glass of the rear window that broke along the top. Poor QA. The center screw needs to be between the two panes of glass. Not liking sharp pointy stuff near the edges of these windows I put a small piece of rubber where the top screw penetrates the frame. This has the effect of keeping the sharp end of the screw away from the glass.

I went around and checked all of the windows and found one other window where the screw was in contact with the glass and re positioned it and added some rubber around the screw ends.

I now have a spare exit window and a complete frame spare! All you need is the glass and it is something you can do yourself in a few minutes. Course Keystone wont sell you just the glass. Instead waste money and get all of the extra stuff you do not need.

I just hate waste! Of course it would not be that hard to replace the whole frame if you were so inclined.

Can you take a pic and maybe draw an arrow to the places where the screws were off and contacting the glass?

I am away from the rig for a bit. Next time I am back I will take some pics and post them here. That being said there are only 3 small screws on the top of the frame of the window. Will post pics when I get back to the fiver.
