Base Camp in Alaska
A question for the folks who have made it to Alaska. Once we arrive in Alaska I think that the wife and I would settle on 1 or possibly 2 base camps where we would maybe stay for a month or so. From there do day trips out and then back to camp.
Any suggestions on what cities we should consider for this?
Any ideas will be appreciated.

Based on our experience, we would rather move around than stay in one place for a month. Alaska is pretty spread out. We would return to Fairbanks, Anchorage, Valdez, Seward for long stays, maybe two weeks. A long stay on the Kenai would be great if you're interested in fishing. There's too much to see to stay in one place for long. It's a great trip.

Bob and Nancy, Having lived in Alaska for 14 years, I agree with Judy. If I was visiting I would stay in: Seward, Talkeetna, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Valdez. Its just too much driving for day trips from one or two locations. I would probably stay IN Anchorage the least. We used to say that Anchorage was 200 miles south of Alaska. This, of course, is my humble opinion.......

We are in Alaska now and have spent a week in Fairbanks and are in Soldatna for fishing for a month. Unforturnately--the salmon have decided to swim in the Cook Inlet and not up the river yet. I would recommend a 10 day to 2 week stay each in Fairbanks, Valdez, Seward and Kenai Area (more if interested in salmon fishing).

Thanks, for response. I really think with the price of fuel always going up, we would divide Alaska into a triangle and camp for 3-4 Weeks in 3-4 different geographical locations across the state. From these base camps we would go on day trips and maybe do overnighters rather than spend the $$ for fuel. Also would be much easier for quick stops and tight places. I think we could get closer to the soul of Alaska without the Monty always a factor where we can go or not go.
Enjoy!

Today, 7/20/2007, diesel is $2.95/gallon in Soldotna and I have found it for $2.79 in Anchorage. But in Canada--it is just plain EXPENSIVE especially in remote locations in the Yukon. I have seen it for up to $5.25/gal even with currency differences. Unleaded is about $3.10/gallon.

Having been there last year, you definitly want to move around. Be sure and stay at the Russian River campground if you are going to Homer. It's on the way. We liked Valdez the best!

I think you will spend way more in day trips or overnighters without your Montana then you would taking it with you.
These places are not close together at all. I think you will wind up missing a lot of the Last Frontier. The only time I would leave the Tana behind is if you go to the Artic Circle or Ocean. JMHO
