How is the vacuum pump not part of the drive train? Maybe it's part of the emissions equipment. I have herd of the vacuum pump leaking on early fords. Not so much on the 15/16 MY.

If you have at least a Base Care extended warranty, the oil pan with no differentiation between upper and lower pans, is specifically mentioned as covered. I would have to "assume" that even the standard 5/100K warranty would cover that pan as well. While it is a fairly high cost to me, my ESP is good to 150K, kept in place since my truck is a Job 1, 20011 with all kinds of niggling potentially expensive repairs.


As a note, not all Ford dealers will offer this long term ESP. My dealer just laughed and wouldn't give it a look so I went on a 'net search and purchased it through Lombard Ford. It has been used once.

Don’t know if it’s still true but recently ford owned Cummins but is not allowed to use it in their smaller trucks due to a contract previously signed with dodge. Great motor. Too bad they can’t use it, YET.

Ford has never owned Cummings. This is urban legend that has been around for years.

Cummins is a public shares. Ford owns about 30%, but not a controlling interest. Ford is in a contract with navistar and cummins is in a contract with fiat Chrysler. The Cummins used to be put in the F650 and larger trucks along with Allison trans, but thoughs days are long gone. As for a cummins in a ford F450 or smaller, it probably will not happen anytime soon. As for ford owning them. Sorry its not true.

There has been a backyard mod putting Cummins engines in the now elderly 6.0 and 6.4 trucks. I looked into buying a real cheap but nice otherwise 6.0 powered truck with a blown engine many years back and went through many hours of research on various websites. Other then that, there was some talk of using the Cummins as OE equipment bbut that disappeared.

The answer is no, Ford never owned Cummins and it doesn't own it today either. It is a myth and has its own little story of why this rumor started going around. However, the people said that it could be true because Ford Motor Company had bought 10.8% shares of the diesel engine manufacturer back in 1990.


Ford quit installing Navistar back in 2011. Ford is the only manufacturer that has designed and built their own Diesel engine. And the only one that uses compacted graphic iron for the block. CGI is a much better material for a block then cast iron. It’s much harder and much more wear resistant and vibration resistant than cast iron. So why don’t everybody use it? You can’t machine a block with machinery designed to machine cast iron. The cutting tools just wont do the job. And the cast iron blocks are too heavy. You need to design the engine from ground up to utilize GGI. Cummings 3L Diesel and Fords 2.7 gas engines are CGI. Peterbuilt newest Diesel is GGI. GGI has been around decades but only in the last few years could it be machined on a production basis. The cutting tools just were not available. With new carbide grades and more importantly coatings it can now be machined without changing the cutters literally every cylinder.
Google compacted graphite iron to see what it is really like. You will see it’s properties, scanning electron microscope view and much more.

Thanks, I just found this about the new Cummings:
The new high-output engine boasts 400 hp and 1000 lb-ft of best-in-class torque. ... A Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) material for the block allows us to increase the cylinder pressure capability while reducing the overall weight by almost 60 lbs.

Lynwood all three brands have great trucks and engines. I am pretty sure that Ford has been using the CGI block material longer than the Cummings at least in this class of engines. By the way Ford actually has the class leading Horse Power and Torque for the 2020 trucks. I really feel it is a matter of which brand you like cause they are all so close in performance and specifications. It will be interesting to see what 2021 brings us. Look up the Ike Challenge for some pretty good third party testing of these rigs with more weight than most of us tow.

Tom I agree they are all great trucks and will surely be better next year. If you buy a new diesel truck you can’t go wrong.

Too us ram guys It. Cummins not Cummings. But If you would like a Cummins in your ford, they make a kit to do just that. and even Youtube videos on it also.

I work at a Ford Dealership part time since retiring from same dealership. Nothing is inexpensive. You have to have a extended warranty. Ford does a great job with their trucks but they are mechanical and things break or robots screw up in this case. I recommend staying on top of the services . Make sure your extended warranty has rental car coverages. Most dealerships have a shortage of good diesel technicians.

Ok, I love reading on this forum and I have learned a lot, but...
after reading this thread a few days ago, now my truck, 2014 F350 6.7 Powerstroke is in the shop with, wait for it...an upper oil pan leak.
Wow, 80,000 miles and no leaks. Less than a week after reading this, $2,400.00 shot. I'm almost afraid to read any more threads.
