Verizon is ending contracts.
Verizon is ending the two year contracts for cell service. We don't know whether to be angry or glad. With the end of contracts comes the end of two year rate locks and reduced price phones to renew and prorating your new phone cost over the life of the contract. We're glad that we can change carriers as we wish, although for us coverage is the most important part of cell service. The pundits are saying that Verizon's already high costs are going to skyrocket. What have you folks been hearing?

Its my understanding that you can keep your existing contract without any changes. I believe it's going to be dealt with as the unlimited plans are yet today. As long as you don't change you can keep the plan you have.
But then again I heard that once before on the Affordable care Act!

I'm paying $46.25 per month for Straight Talk, 5 gigs unlimited every thing else and it over the Verizon network. At the Verizon store they said I'd be back and they are sorta wright. I just don't pay $90 a month like a guy that works in my shop. He gets 2 gigs of internet service.

We like Verizon as it has the best coverage in our area and the areas in which we travel. I switched us off the 2 year contract to the edge program. We are actually paying less with more data. You can upgrade your phone sooner and if you keep your phone, then in 2 years your bill drops because the phone cost comes off. They just announced new plans and for us it will drop our monthly cost by $20.

Since we depend on Verizon, the uncertainty is somewhat unsettling. Since we use 40 gigs a month it would be nice if the price went down, but we'd have to do something else if the price went up. Sure is handy to have the radar on my iPad in the truck when we're headed into storms, but we got by without it in the past.

We have the Verizon Edge and are paying for our phones on a monthly basis with no contract. We are still trying to figure out the various offers they now have including the cost of the data. Right now we get 20 GB for the price of 10GB with a special deal on our Mi-Fi but that runs out in February so we are going to have to get to Verizon to see what we can work out.

It looks like the only good news here is that we have 21 more months on our contract. From the link you've shown us, Bigboomer, it looks like to maintain what's in our current plan, our costs will rise about 20 to 25%. Since we are full timers we need the best coverage. With prices rising as they will, we may have to settle for 2nd best.

With Straight Talk you have Verizon coverage at half the cost. There are a few places there are no Verizon towers but every where else it IS Verizon.

Thanks Les, that makes it a little more understandable.
