Camping @ Pilot
My buddy left SW Florida yesterday to start a 7 month trip in his SOB fiver. He has a generator and has his first two nights planned at Flying J - Pilot Truck Stops. Talked to him last night and he was set up at the first one. He stayed hooked up, generator running, sitting in his lawn chair outside, drinking a beer out of a coffee mug, smoking his cigar. He was happy with the spot but this was their first time trying this. Anyone else do overnights at these Flying J - Pilot truck stops?

Hope he was not taking up more that one RV spot. This a pet peeve of mine - people opening slides, etc. and preventing others from stopping or parking to use the facilities. Trucker also get upset with RV's doing this too.

Here is a link to the "RVers Good Neighbor Policy" If you scroll down to the bottom you will see it is endorsed by many RV groups.

We do Pilot/Flying J a lot and we do have to open one slide to get in our bed (something fixed on most newer rigs). We only park along the edge or next to an island so our slide is out of the way. We have reflective tape on both sides of our slide and our steps. We do not get out the lawn chairs and set up camp. Space is at a premium in truck stops now days and we don't want to take up any more than necessary. Also, as a general rule Flying J's have better RV facilities. One exception to that is Eloy, AZ just south of the I-10, I-8 junction. The Flying J there has very little space and the Pilot on the other side of the road has a lot. We'll be at that Pilot this evening.

It may also be the last time he tries this. Gives a real good impression of Rv'ers.

When I do this, I don't open slides, put jacks out or sit outside and look like I'm 'camping.'
On edit: I don't do this often, and never with the D/W, she doesn't like it.

We have done stops there too. Most times they have spaces for RV's. Never had to run my generator since it was further north but figure it can't be more annoying then 50 idling diesels lol lol.... Didn't have to make coffee in the morning either lol lol

I saw a 5er at a HomeDepot yesterday. Lowes and Home Depot look like they have lots of room and less noise than truck stops and Walmarts.

Hi
Fortunately I still have my CDL if anyone asks I just show it to them.
I purchase most of my diesel at truck stops and use my company name to get the truckers cash price.
Don’t RON often only twice in 4 ½ years.

You won't ever catch me in a Pilot or Flying J over nighting or for anything else. I am a retired trucker and cut the cord with them years ago when they stopped the free cup of coffee for fueling customers. I just purchased 275-300 gallons of fuel and am being charged for a small coffee? Won't happen again. Their prices are higher than many others anyway.

We have overnighted at several Menard's. Normally very quiet and safe. They do come to work early, however.

We have stayed at a few Flying J's but usually seek out a Cracker Barrel(and get a great breakfast in the morning). We do this if traveling for two consecutive days, carry enough water for a couple quick showers, and if we need a second night we usually spend that one, or two, at an rv park close to an exit. We do open the slides, run the gen if it's cold or really hot. Always park out of the way. Never put out chairs but will have a cold one or two while waiting for the electric mattress pad to warm up the bed enough(memory foam toppers take a while). We don't like to pull in until right before closing time. We like to show consideration and respect to businesses that show the same to rv'ers.

I have stayed at several large truck stops. I always ask and sometimes they show me some quieter place to stay on the lot.

I can tell you that at Lowe's we typically have no issues with overnight stops. It is nice if you come into the store and let one of us (Store Managers)know that you are there and will be leaving early. In some residential areas, generators running all night are highly frowned upon.

Hi
I have stopped using Pilot !Flying J as well because they are higher than others and now they are playing the holding game with fuel cards where they hold the difference between the amount you guessed at and what you used for 3 days.
Loves is much better.

I may try a night in a Flying J or Walmart sometime. We don't have a generator plus I generally only like to drive from about 9am to 4pm. It sure is nice to have everything all hooked up in a full service RV park every night. I'm not sure what everyone is talking about with getting fuel at Flying J / Pilot though. We haven't fueled there in the last couple of months, but when traveling we always use our Pilot card at the diesel pump for the discount off each gallon. Right now diesel is anywhere from 4.09 to 4.15 at other stations in SW Florida, so getting it at the closest Pilot for 4.01 is fine with me.

I'm not retired so the destination is more important to me than the journey. Therefore I drive until I cannot safely drive anymore and at that time will usually find a truck stop or Walmart to overnight in when necessary. I have to open the bedroom slide in order to get into the bedroom. Therefore I will only park alongside a curb, island, or grassy area where my slide out will not impose on traffic or any other drivers. So far I've not had any issues with my methods.

We have never stayed at a big box lot or truck stop or rest area ever but appreciate the opportunity to do so. We like to kick back and enjoy the benefits of a campground. We would overnight at any of those places if we had the need to do so

I know that when they first merged many of the pilot stations did that or you had to pay inside which we did not care for.
Now just about all of the former pilot stations have caught up and it is pay at the pump same as the FJ stations. I guess some of the stations have not yet switched to the new technology. In our travels for the last couple of years it has all been pay at the pump.

I go inside too, however I don't "let them know I'll be there," but I ask if it's okay for me to be there.

Mobil - How can you stay at Cracker Barrel? I have yet to find one I can actually pull a trailer into unless it is in a lot nearby.
