Grease Gun Storage

What do you use for storing your grease gun to keep things clean while travelling? Any ideas other than a flat plastic storage box with a lid?

I put mine in a large zip lock bag along with putting that inside a plastic tote with lid. I keep it with all my tools in the basement pass through. Grease does leak from time to time, so the zip lock bag catches it before it gets all over everything else.

Do almost the same thing except I keep it stored in the back of the truck in my aluminum storage box along with other lubricants

I don’t travel with my grease gun. It’s the messiest job ever. I do the bearing maintenance at home on an annual basis. But your issue hits home because I’ve never had a grease gun that didn’t leak. A buddy of mine was a geotechnical engineer and he gave me a bunch of heavy duty plastic bags that they used for collecting soil samples. Been using one of those bags for many years to store my grease gun.

Same here. I do all by lube work prior to hitting the road, so it stays at home in my RV storage building. It is wrapped in two or three Walmart plastic bags.

I have two mini grease guns and keep them in zip lock bags. Before I got the second one I kept it in the lubricant tub in my trucks tool box, but since we have two home bases I now just keep one on each end.

I have no use for a grease gun on my camper so I keep it in the shop.

Unless your fiver is all you have to live in ... I can't think of anything on your fiver that would require hauling a grease gun around. A few squirts in Spring and a few in Fall on the wet bolts works well for me as the gun hangs in my garage. The EZ lube spindle invention is not something I care to use.

I'm in the keep it in the shop gang. If we travel over a lengthy period and distance, I grease before we leave and when we get back. If we were to do another cross country jaunt, the grease gun would again be in a plastic bag and in the front compartment along with the jack, spare pre packed wheel bearings, Lego blocks and whatever other less then clean gadgets are stored.

From what I have found online, wet bolts are to be greased between 2000 and 5000 miles. I travel 7-10,000 miles in the summer. I shoot for 3500 miles, so I must grease at least once on the road, often twice. So I carry the gun in a plastic bag.

Performance Tool W54271 Grease Gun Holder from Amazon is what i used to hold the grease gun in basement. Mounted to Basement wall in a plastic bag. I've also found the gun leaks less if mounted upside down.

All grease is not the same

I wondered why my grease guns would start leaking thinner oil. After a few days of research revealed some real interesting information about “grease”. From what I learned bearing grease separates when it gets old. When it gets old it has started to break down and is starting to loose some of its chemical make up that protects surfaces. Also grease is not interchangeable. A big ziplock (2-1/2 gallon) works great for the gun and when I see liquid leaking out of the gun I know it is time to swap out the tube in the gun. More importantly when the gun oozes oil I know then the bearings need to be pulled apart and re-packed. That’s why they say to repack every year and to repack with a similar grease. Dissimilar greases actually react and break down faster. The folks at Lucas Oil were great at providing all the info and documentation about grease even though I wasn’t using Lucas Oil in my regrease. I was frustrated with the oil leaking out of my Lucas Oil grease gun is which prompted the grease lesson.

A short piece of PVC pipe mounted vertically with a cap on the bottom (not glued) works well. If you want to get fancy, you can cut a slot for the grease gun handle to go in. The bottom cap can be removed periodically and emptied of oil that leaks from the gun.

I am not an expert, but years ago I went to red grease and have never had an issue with separation or breakdown of the grease. I use it on all bearings, pin bushings, jack screws etc.

Also, farm stores like TSC sell spring loaded grease gun holders for equipment. You can mount them anywhere and attach a paper shop towel to the hose end with a rubber band.

I have always used puppy training pads in the garage and on the road. I wrap the gun up in one. Any leakage is absorbed, and the plastic liner keeps it contained. I keep it in a bucket in the 5er with some other stuff.

I bought a grease gun barrel cap which goes over the end with the blunger handle. It also comes with a cap for the coupler end too. It has worked so for.
