Heading out with no reservations

We are going to leave around the end of the month for our first snowbirding trip in our 5er. As our departure date depends on the weather and a couple of other things, I haven't made any reservations anywhere. Do those of you who head for southern Texas or Arizona think that we will have a problem finding a place to stay?

Probably not. You may find a few parks full and some may not have a big choice as far as sites, but I don't think you'll have a big problem.

Then, there is always BLM land.....

We didn't last year. We left this year on the 28th of Dec and just headed south. That is the extent of our plans , almost. We are at son's in Dacula Georgia at the moment. From here a short run to Florida then on to the west. Maybe Quartz site, Rio Grande valley, Port A, S. Pardre Who knows. Got 10.5 mph @ 67 to 73 mph so far. Gotta stay out of that hammer lane I guess. Did find out truck will not shift into passing gear at 75 ( must be telling me something) Dan

We're sitting here in Winter Garden. Despite predictions the park would fill after the 1st of January there are about 20 spaces that I can see from my window. Yeah, the biggest and best?? are occupied but there is still lots of room.

We drove through Bushnell yesterday. There was lots of space in the Dread (red) Barn and the Oaks. The local trailer park (mobile home) had an empty RV spot but it was very close to 301. Snow Bird South at Center Hill was also not very full.

We recently traveled from Waco, TX. west to San Diego, Ca. and back through the Big Bend and did not have any reservations except at our destination. We were only staying overnight and did not require a premium site, just a place to get off the road. We also found something that many of you might find useful, a trailer/RV wash in Yuma AZ. We had passed through some nasty weather on the way west and found the RV wash by chance and after three weeks right on the coast in S.D. I thought it best to get another wash job. It is located at FOOTHILLS BLVD and 30th St. behind a grocery store. We only had a short wait each time and the price was not bad. Happy camping. Wacot

PS our highest diesel price across the SW was in New Mexico, Deming I think it was, $2.36 per gal, for the most part it was around $2.00-$2.20 range, still high for diesel but affordable if you pinch somewhere else, I don't let a feww cents keep me from keeping with our plans. Now that we are back home it is under $2.00 again, oh well!!

Very interesting about all the empty space you folks are seeing.

We are planning to head to the Texas Gulf ( Brownsville or Corpus Christi) for a couple weeks in March. I'm wondering if maybe a lot of Snowbirds are staying home due to the high Fuel/Gas prices?

I'll ask for an update in these areas towards the end of February.

Happy Camping

This park was the same last winter. I think people spend a lot of time worrying..... I suspect the parks that service the attractions are busier... but if you get a bit off the beaten path a bit there seems to be lots of room.

Thanks for all of your responses. Maybe I can relax a little more now. Can't wait to head for some sunshine!

MeinMo,
I do not think you will have trouble finding a park in South Texas. South Texas to some is anything South of Austin. If you travel down 281 South you will see many parks in the Texas hill country.
Deep South Padre Island may be a bit off a challenge...but the Texas coast is a long way from one end to the other.
Enjoy and have a good trip!

MeinMo -

You probably have a Trailer Life or Woodalls book. E-mail a few places and see how they've been. Or use the 800 numbers. I know as you go from the North to the South, you will go through a lot of country where few campgrounds are open. In Illinois, it would be a challenge finding many - but I'm sure there are some. Have a great trip.

We took a drive around McAllen, Tx. the other day going into parks looking for Montana's and talking to owners. Still haven't found anyone that was at the rally. But, back to the subject, there were a lot of vacancies in some of the parks. Shouldn't have a problems if you are planning on going to the Rio Grande Valley.
