Maxxis tires

Any one running Maxxis tires on a Montana. My 15,500 GVR Montana needs tires soon. I don't think I've ever heard a bad thing about the Maxxis tires with one exception, they are not commonly stocked by tire dealers.

I'm still on the fence about getting LT tires installed. G-614's are not in the budget right now. I need to find something around $250 each mounted and balanced.

Just had this whole discussion last night with my friend. He has a new SOB triple axle 42' toy hauler. He thinks his loaded weight is between 16,000 and 18,000. In the last 12 months (approximately 3,000 tow miles) he has blown 4 of his 6 tires). Only one blow out wasn't noticed in time but that one caused over $2,000 in damage to rig. Due to his warranties/insurance everything has been covered except small deductibles. They are leaving April 1 for extended travel throughout the western states. He just doesn't want to spend $2,400 - $2,600 for the new G614 tires. My argument is, based on the history of his tires, he will actually have at least 6 or 7 additional tire failures during his upcoming 5 months of travel. Since we are both retired LEO's, I think I have him almost convinced that it is more of a safety issue and he has to spend the money. In your case, a possible difference of spending between $300 and $400 for a set of G614's compared to a set of Maxxis, I think it would be well worth the extra spent.

I would seriously look into the Sailun S637 G rated tires , good reviews so far, and well within your budget. I run G614's ,but will go to the Sailun when the time comes. The G614's are getting pretty expensive

I just got an estimate at Discount Tire Centers (the purple and white stores) for some Maxxis M8008 tires with the correct ratings and size for my Montana (10 ply ST235/80R-16 LRE, 3,400 lb rating for my 6,000 lb axles) when I replace my aged-out Marathons this month. Less than $151 installed (includes balancing) each or $753.87 (if you want to do the math for five tires, which includes the spare). My BIL will be putting those on his Everest. They stock these tires and can have them at their store (going to Hemet, CA) in a day. I didn't check on the Sailuns since these Maxxis meet my needs and wallet. Now I hope for as recent date codes as possible - I will remind the tire store manager to check this.

With their reputation, I hope I don't have to concern myself about their availability if something happens on the road which should be rare and I don't plan to slack off taking care of these any less than I babied my Marathons and they did well, and I'm hoping the Maxxis will be less stressful.

I agree, the Sailun S637 is fairly new but has good reviews by the early adopters. They are on my list when I have to replace my G614s.

It's alleged Maxxis is made in the U.S. and Sailun is Chinese made, but only the deciphered DOT code on the sidewall will tell you.

Even though Sailun is Chinese made, their trailer tires are highly rated and can be found with higher specs, too.

Many have had good luck with Maxxis. We are currently using 614's and the way they have performed even when abused (carrying the weight of one whole side on one tire for 90 miles and two years later still on the same wheel) will probably replace with 614's when we need to. Of all the things we spend money on on these rigs tires are, in my opinion, the most important. Just make sure what you get is rated for what you weigh.

I ran Maxxis on my Cougar 327 res that I had before my Monty. Had no issues with them. Put 614's on my new Monty as I had a China Bomb blow out on my Cougar and do 8 thousand damage to it with about 6 thousand miles on them. Would do nothing about it. I had put about 35 on the Maxxis before getting rid of them. No issues and a lot cheaper.

Most will say, somewhere on the tire, "Made In USA," "Made In Japan," "Made In China"...etc.

Maxxis tires are manufactured in Thailand. The fact that they are an ST foreign made tire would give me concern. There are much better choices in a LT tire made in the US.

We are on our 2nd set of Maxxis 8088 235/80R16E tires and have not had any issues with them. They wear well and run cooler than the Marathons that came on the rig. I purchased my latest set from Discount Tire online and they were $620 delivered to my front door (free shipping). Here is a link to their current offer: http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...35&ar=80&rd=16 Looks like there maybe some additional discounts too. I took them to a local tire shop and had them mounted and balanced for an additional $91.43.

The tires are rated for 3420 lbs at 80 psi. Here is a link to their load rating chart: Maxxis We have 7K axles and the last time I weighed our rig I had 12260 lbs on the axles.

When I replaced my previous set of Maxxis tires in Oct 2013 they had about 43K on them. I porbably could have gotten more out of them, but didn't want to push it. I did consider a different tire like the G614 or Sailun, but I figured as long as I was having good luck with these, why switch. If I remember correctly these tires are manufactured in Taiwan. When I go look at the rig later I will check and if that is not the case will post what is stamped on the sidewall.
CORRECTION: They ARE made in Thailand

One last thing, the reason I went with these in the first place was when I was in the market for tires before the first set, one of our members who is a tire dealer PM'd me and told me these were the only ST tire he would ever recommend. I have not been disappointed.

Maxxis trailer tires are still the only ST rated tires I will recommend or stock. They are made in Thailand, but they are an exceptionally well made tire. IF I were going to install ST rated tires on my own trailers, it would be these. That being said, I will not run ST rated tires on any of my trailers, as I have found through 35 years of experience, the LT rated tires are much more dependable for my usage.

If I had 7,000 lb axles I would use a tire rated for at least 3,500 lbs (x2 = 7,000 lbs). But that's me and I go on ratings not actual weight since they can both be different.

The tires Jackel1959 describes would work for my '06 3500RL with 6000 lb axles. The actual weight on all four Montana tires is less than the 12,000 lb combined rating these tires easily support.

belldog, I hope you have good luck with the Carlilses. They say they have changed some of their designs and manufacturing processes, so maybe they have done something good. My experience in the past with Carlilse trailer tires has left me unimpressed.

My sentiments exactly. Jackal1959 has the same trailer as I do, and the price for the tires is about half that of a G614, but I have trouble getting around the idea that my tires might not support the load in the event I was at max GVW, which I'm sure I'm not at the moment. I guess as long as you stay on top of your weights, which is a good idea anyway, it's a good alternative to the G rated tires.
