Land Gear How much travel

Anyone know how far landing gear extends? Want to mark mine so as not to get in a bind. Did a search here with no results. I'm sure someone will reply. Thanks in advance.

Not sure how far they will extend, I usually try to keep the legs as short as possible. The shorter the legs the less movement you get. I use the lego blocks stacked under the legs to keep them short.

There has been several postings related to landing legs in the last few months. Unfortunately the "Search" feature has gone missing once again and is useless. I do know the legs have 19-20" of travel. If you email or PM me your email address I will send you a bunch of PDFs on Venture's landing legs.

On Edit: corrected travel length to 19-20" (not 10-20")

I measured mine and found the thread length was 20.5". So 19 to 20 should be safe. If you hear any resistance then stop immediately.

X2. Mine are marked at 19".

The one thing I remember specifically from the documentation that came with my replacement legs was to leave 6 inches of travel on the legs the bottom when under a load. 19 inches sounds right for total travel.

IMHO....travel on lubricated threads is good. Just not too much. Untraveled have a tendency to corrode. Proper lube of gears and shaft are key to long life. Larry

Agree. The documentation recommended full travel occasionally (but only under NO load) up and down for just that reason.

So to run them all the way out NO load, do you extend until they stop then back in? IE: is it harmful to go to the end? When I retract I go till it stops.

IMHO, If you keep retracting them until they stop, plan on staying hitched to that bighornram while "Doc" the service guy fixes the stuck/stripped landing gear. Why not stop an inch short?

Had not really thought about it before. Just retracted till they were up. I'll certainly stop short from now on. Thanks for that tip. :S

I agree with pineranch ... you just asking for failure when forcing the landing gear to full retraction. There's just no need for that kind of clearance. I'd also recommmend packing a few pieces of wood or those lego blocks along. That way you'll have no need to test anywhere near whatever full extension is.

I've done that for years.

Thanks for the heads up about retracting.

Went to Venture Mfg. Co. web site. Found there is 20" of stroke. Don't think I would ever extend beyond 12" or so. Marked where the leg is retracted. Then extended out 19" and marked with a file for reference just in case I forget in the future. Thanks for all the replies.

The Venture documentation states there should be at least 3" of leg exposed to avoid over retraction (and broken parts).
