Life is good!

About nine months ago, my wife found out she had an arteriovenous fistula. For those of you who, like myself aren't doctors, this is collection or an entanglement of blood vessels. In my wife's case, this was compounded with aneurysms in the same spot. Aneurysms are like a balloon in an artery, and can pop, causing bleeding which may lead to death. Even worse was this whole mess is located in her brain and is inoperable. The doctors told us that they only find out about these conditions in one of two ways: by accident, or on the autopsy table. In my wife's instance, it was found out during a CT scan to determine the cause for headaches she was having.

A few months after being diagnosed, she under went a partial embolization, which is a process where the doctor enters the main artery in her leg, runs a tube up to the aneurysm and injects glue to block off the artery. During this procedure, my wife had a mini stroke and lost part of her vision. Luckily, her vision returned.

After the embolizated area had time to stabilize, another doctor performed a gamma knife procedure. This was on Thursday of this week. Gamma knife treatment has been around for a long time, but recent developments in computer assisted procedures have made it much more precise. In my wife's case, precision was the key because the area in her brain where the malformation is controls speech, sight and motor skills. If the gamma treatment is off, it will destroy brain cells and obviously have negative effects. The gamma treatment causes the malformation to slowly shrink over time - up to two years. So it won't be soon before she knows the final results, but the Dr., nurses and three physicists who were in on the procedure said it couldn't have gone any better.

All this work was performed at Henry Ford hospital in West Bloomfield, Michigan. With our daughter's numerous health issues, we have been exposed to many hospitals, from the old Pontiac General, to U of M, and all points in between. I can say without a doubt that Henry Ford is the best. Not only is the care top notch, but they are the only facility that have this model of gamma machine, which was donated to the facility 2 years ago by a $3.5 million dollar gift. So if anyone out there ever learns they have a similar problem, or knows of someone who does, please point them to this facility.

So it looks very promising that my wife of 43 years will be sticking around a bit longer. Life is good!

Great news for you and your family, Tom S. That's a great story and written so even I can understand it. So many times we wish things were medically better that we often forget the amazing things that can be done.

The best to you, your wife and daughter. God Bless you all.
