I've had it with the Chinese tires

5600 miles on a set of Carlisle 15" "E" tires and the second one just got a bulge and developed a hole in the tread. The first one blew out on I40 last fall taking the fender with it as well as damaging the underbody. These tires were the ONLY load E, 15" tires I could find. The original tires on the TT were another set of Chinese junk and 3 of 4 had tread separation after about 1500 miles.

So-my solution is to dump the whole mess and go to 16" wheels and tires. I can use 225/75/16r (E), AMERICAN MADE tires and the height difference will only be 2 or so inches.

If anybody has done this, I would appreciate your comments.

If I was increasing the outside diameter of the tires/wheels I would have to make sure my scissor chocks still fit between them or else I'll be buying new scissor X-chocks which are designed for tires that tandem close together.

One of the MOC tire experts, LonnieB can probably confirm the size and interval of the tires. What Brand tires are you planning on? LT or ST?

On edit: I forgot to mention to check the load rating on the tires VERY closely. Not all E rated tires have the same numerical rating depending on the size and brand. You also need to know your axle rating. If you have 7,000 lbs rated axles, you will need a heavier rated tire than with 6,000 lb axles. I have 6,000 lb axles with 3,420 lb E rated Goodyear ST Marathons. So far, so good, even though others have had problems with them.

Art, the Carlisle diameter is 28.3" mounted and the tires I will probably get are Michelin. They run 29.3" to 29.5" mounted so the space between tires will shrink by 1" to 1.2". And they still make vasoline, don't they.

I still have to check the bolt pattern for the wheels and I will only be able to use 6 bolt wheels because I don't want to change out the drums.

ARJ, you might check over on RV net. There's been a lot of discussion on the switch from 15 to 16" wheels and tires on the fifth wheel forum of late. Good luck.

If you are planning on staying with 15" tires Maxxis makes a E rated tire the size is ST225/75R/15 (2830 lbs). I've heard that Maxxis is one of the best ST tires. We just bought a new 3150RL and I had the sales guy check on the tires. Once he told me they were Goodyear Marathon tires made in China I told him to put on Maxxis tires, which they did. I had two Marathon tires blow on our old 5th wheel.

Another option is to keep your wheels and get 235/85's to go on them. There are American made tires you can get in that size. On mine, I can still get the X-chocks in.

To my knowledge, nobody makes a LT235/85R15.

ARJ, I have replaced the 15 inch tires and wheels with 16 inch tires and wheels on one camper. The man wanted a little more height and width, had plenty of clearance, so we went with the LT245/75R16 in load range E. Everything worked out fine, and he has been many trouble free miles since.

If you have the clearance, the 16 inch tires and wheels you are thinking about will work great.

Thanks Lonnie! My 31rld came with "d" load tires which were exactly at the loaded trailer limit for the tires according to the Keystone specs. More cost savings for Keystone?

The "e"'s I put on should have had enough fat to carry the fully loaded trailer according to the specs but of course they are Chinese.

Now I will have to decide between 225's and 245's because the 245's are pushing the envelope clearance wise.

Apr.7, 2010 I had a blowout on a Mission tire ST235/80R16 DOT# 4YB3 CQ1C (4905). Left rear tire on 2006 3400RL. Less than 5000mi. on these tires.
I was traveling at about 60mph and only been on the road 45min.
Took out the wheel well, trim around wheel well and crumpled the lower section of rear slide. Still waiting for the total damage cost.
Killed my trip to Texas from Missouri.
I replaced the all tires with LT235/85R16E.

Well, I'm a new member of the failed Marathon tires on my new 2012 3700RL Montana!
Thank you to MOC and the Atlantic Rally becuase I'm at the ralley now and it was the experienced folks here that noticed TWO of my four tires are about to delaminate. I Just bought this rig in December of 2012 and have about 10,000 miles on it.

Camping World in Myrtle Beach quoted me $2022.55 to replace all 5 tires. Robin of Camping World said I would need to contact Myrtle Beach Goodyear (843) 626-7400 to inquire about a rebait due to failed tires.

Does anyone have a better Goodyear contact that is familiar with the issue I might talk to (or advice of what I might say to the local Goodyear rep to get a rebait?

I also noted your other post on price. If that is with tax, it is in the ballpark - about $350/per plus tax is about $1900. As far as current rebates for the G614s, I just contacted Goodyear and there is nothing available - However, I was offered a customer loyalty rebate just for the inquiry. It was only $10 per tire, but hey, better than nothing.

I called Goodyear national customer service, got the number from the net. I asked for a supervisor, but didn't get one. When the rep asked what was wrong I told him "you know and I know that Marathons shouldn't be on a rig this heavy. Can we work something out now or do you want to wait till damage is involved?" I was placed on hold for a long time, but finally they directed me to a Goodyear dealer to have the remaining tread measured. The dealer then called them and then offered me a deal that I took. You have an advantage in the negotiations since you have had failures. Call national and push nicely for a solution that makes sense.
