Slide Hydraulic Ram Adjustment

Was going through the slide maintenance book today and came across ram adjustment for tightness on the in postion and the out postion. It noted that once both postions of slide is established to bring all three nuts together first torquing the two nuts on each side of the bracket to hold it firm and then lock the two nuts on the inner side as the final step. Checked mine on the new unit and all of the rams had at least 1 to 1 1/4 inch of space between the outer nut and the two inner locked nuts. This situation was allowing the brackett to bend. Has anyone else noted this on their slide rams or was this missed at the factory and then on the PDI? When I originally looked I had thought this bracket play was a requirement. Hope this is descriptive enough and really interested to see what the feedback is. Thanks Ellis

Ellis,
All I can remember is what the rep from Lippert told us. DO NOT MOVE those nuts. They are supposed to be whatever way you described. If your slides are not working properly then I'd get them in for an adjustment. But the Lippert rep indicated you could end up causing major damage to slides, rams, rig..... That's all I remember.

Do whatever you think best but I'd take it in to get any adjustment done to the ram. I'd try watching to see the proper way to do it. Then if they ever need adjusting I'd know what to do..... I'd still take it in to a dealer for adjustment!

Good luck.

Dennis

I replaced the cylinder on our LR/DR slide. The cylinder stroke is longer than the slide travel is. As Dennis said, do not take the clearance out of the nuts, or you will damage the slide or RV outer wall. I fill sure the Lippert Components site gives adjustment tips.

Be very careful!

I would talk to Lippert Customer Service if in doubt, but my memory is similar to HamRad's.

To add to this: The original Manual (no date) that came with our new 3400RL; Lippert states to lock all three nuts together with no space at the bracket. On their Web site page 10, mechanical room adjustments-cont., of the Hydraulic Slideout System Operation and Service Manual; the directions are to leave a 2 to 3 inch space between outer nut and two inner lock nuts. This I am assuming would apply to the newer built Montanas. I wonder what hppened and why the change?? Ellis

Pretty simple. The stroke is longer than the slide out travels. IMO, it would be hard to build every slide unit exactly with exactly the same travel. Thus, the long travel cylinder, and leave the space in between the nuts. Inner nut sets outer travel limits; outer nuts set inner travel limits. You just want it to crush the rubber seals both ways. IIRC, the cylinder is 2" diameter and the pump is somewhere around 2300 PSI. I'm thinking that would be somewhat over 3000 lbs. of force the cylinder would exert on the out stroke; somewhat less on the in stroke. Enough to do some serious damage. JMHO

MIMF, our resident Lippert slide expert, told me to leave that space as it is.
