light over dinette table

This is my first 5th wheel. Its a 325 RLT 2008. We bought it new in December. It just warmed up enough here in upstate NY that I can start checking it out. What I find odd is the light
over the dinette table is 120v ac so it doesn't come on when I'm on battery power.
Does anybody else have this problem?

If you're on battery power and the light operates on 110-120 vac, it won't come on. You must be connected to the ac source.

I can't address what other manufacturers do, but Keystone puts a mixture of 12vdc and 120vac fixtures. This means you will have a light source regardless of the power source you have at hand.

120vac will not work on battery alone unless you have it connected to an inverter.

As ols1932 stated and I have to do the same there are several 120 VAC lights in your monty that require shore power to work. you also have a 12 VDC system that runs off the battery and are charged up when conected to shore power through the converter that is in the fuse box along with the AC fuses for all the AC appliances.

Someone may ask, "Why do they have both ac and dc fixtures in an RV. That's so you can go camping where there is no ac to hook up to and you will still be able to live comfortably while camping. Because you will have lights, furnace if you need it, hot water and refrigerator (on propane, of course). You need dc to fire the reefer and hot water heater.

Just thought I'd add this little bit of info in case anyone might be interested.

Why not have all lights 12v? Then they all work all the time instead of being in the dark in parts of the unit ( like when i'm eating! ) I'll be changing this light to 12v soon.

tspoon, I guess they do it different on different models because I have both 120 and 12 over our dinette table.

Not sure, but it maybe done encase your inverter goes out.

Our Mountaineer came with only 120vac fixtures in the "super slide" - which includes the dinette and couch. This was a problem when away from shore power or off generator.

Sooo - I pulled a 12vdc cable into the slide from the underside - festooning it along with the 120vac cable - and up into the overhead cabinets. I then acquired matching 12vdc fixtures and added them over the dinette and couch areas.

Problem solved.

One bit of advise here - use a two conductor heavy jacket cable to withstand the mechanical requirements of the festoon.

My 2006 3500RL has both a 12v fixture under the overhead cabinets above the dinette and a 110v fixture on the slide's roof over the dinette. Here's a silly question. Did check for a 12v in a different spot near the 110v?

Otherwise the lights in the kitchen's ceiling are 12v probably like yours and you'll have to use those.

But wait! How about candles? Every night is a romantic meal in your rig!
