New truck/Brake controllers

Hi all. I just upgraded from a 2004 silv. 2500 diesel using a prodigy brake controler to a 2012 silv 3500 SRW diesel which has a factory installed brake controller, pulling a 2010 3400RL. Does anyone have experience with these built in units or should I try and stick with the prodigy? Thanks,Steve

My truck is an '07.5, the first year of the IBC, I believe. I had a Prodigy in my '04 Silverado as well. It was a good unit, but this one works just as well for me. It's easy to adjust and has proven to be reliable. Basically it's been a non-issue for me. I'd recommend giving it a try to see how you like it before installing the Prodigy. I would guess they've only gotten better over the several years between your truck and mine.

My factory unit in this new truck and my older truck work well. The P3 in my new jeep works the same, frankly I can't tell the difference!

I don't have a GMC but the indash unit in my last two trucks have worked like a charm. I would think GMC units would work just as well.

I agree with Mike. Most all new brake controllers work real well, find a setting that works for you and drive on. Congratulations on the new TV

We went from an 05 Dually using a Prodigy to an 11 Dually with the built-in controller and just love it. Because the built-in is in contact with the TV computer it knows exactly what the TV is doing and applies the RV brakes accordingly. Think you will like it.

I love the IBC. I tow several different trailers and like the fact that i can just set to a number when I change my load. No more adjusting before hitting the road.

Hi Steve,

I have a similar truck to yours and I use the IBCS controller. I also had the Prodigy installed in my Dodge truck, which is now sitting on my work bench.

Being familiar with the Prodigy, I will say for me the factory installed unit provide better braking and also work in tandem with the truck stability control and will apply braking action to the trailer automatically if the trailer starts to sway. Also work with the ABS. The Prodigy is not integrated into the electronics like the IBCS from the factory. The Prodigy is a good controller but from my opinion, the IBCS does have it beat here.

Factory installed GM unit will not work with electric-over-hydraulic disc brakes. Prodigy 3 works very well.

I think you will love your truck's controller. Smooth and you can't hardly tell you are pulling anything. Just pick a number between 5-9 that you are comfortable with and drive. I set my 2013 GMC 3500HD SRW to 7.5 before our 1,400 trip from Mich to FL this fall and I have never touched it since...

Just to report on the trailer brake controller on the 2014 Ram 3500, it had the normal controls on the dash, but it has a setup screen that supports 4 different trailer, with each being able to be light electric, heavy electric, light electric over hydraulic, or heavy electric over hydraulic. Whatever that means. I hope the dealer know what setting to choose for my 2014 3402RL. I'm picking it up soon.

As to the Electric Hydraulic Disc Brakes, there are several companies that make an interface box to trick the on-board controller into thinking it's operating standard electric drums. Our SOB with Factory Disc comes with the interface box installed so it was a simple plug and go with our '11 3500HD Dually.
