Generator Prep

Our camper was to have the generator prep. What exactly is involved with this. What do I look for to see if I have it. I don't see anything but don't know what I am looking for either. When we did the PDI the guy who was suppose to install it was not there. No one else knew anything about it.

I am in the process of getting camper ready for outings thus have all these questions.

Thanks
Drew

Well for starters the front compartment will have enclosed area for generator to set and be installed with wires hanging in there. you will also see in front compartment a transfer switch. inside you coach you should have a button with hour meter beside it marked generator Onan start, may be on a panel with your other switches.

You should have a console mounted inside your closet for gen start. The front compartment should have a 'tin enclosure', probably on the left side as you face it.

Nope, it's not there. Little detail they missed. I'll have to call them. Won't need the generator for a couple years and can't stand the added weight of it at this point but would like it ready.

Thanks for the help.

Drew

Drew, do you have a generator for it?
Depending on your camping style, you can have from a small appliance needs, to a full A/C, microwave and heater gen set.
If you camp in RV parks and most county, state parks you may not even need one.
Sorry if I am talking too simplistic, but I don't know your level of experience.
A built in Gen is quite expensive, conversely, a small Honda, Yammahaw, or Kipor are much less money.
Good luck on your camping adventure.

Drew,

If the generator prep was something you paid for and didn't get, I would be talking to the dealer pretty quick for resolution.

The prep is a nice setup, but will be really difficult for the Dealer to install now.

Experience is only with a pop up so this is a big step. We love the pop up, camping at camp grounds and boondocking on batteries with it. Retirement is 2 years away and we plan to go out long term - see the country up close. So we have two years to master this unit.

The generator is primarily for boondocking on some family shore property near by. Probably move to Virginia in two years then home will not be close by to this family property.

Brad
I already called the dealer. They will refund me the prep charge. I won't put a generator in at this time as I have to watch the pin weight closely. So an external generator seems to be the best answer to the above. We will not need to run air when at the above site. Lights and pumps only. Maybe I can do it on batteries alone?

Thanks,
Drew

We have 4 6 volt golf cart batteries in our coach and a 2000 amp inverter- We can boondock until we must dump our tanks- about 5 days- the batteries last longer- welcome to MOC- Don

We got the generator prep in our new 2955RL. Probably won't use the generator, but thought it was just a wiring harness. The sheet metal enclosure really limits front compartment storage, so if you don't think you'll need the generator, I wouldn't bother. Our Honda 2000 generator does everything we need when boondocking so far.

We just had an Onan Micro Quiet 3600LP generator installed in our 2955RL. Did a test run for about 2 hours, everthing worked fine. But, it did not register the hours ran in the hour meter. Has anyone had this problem? Was something not hooked up properly?

I agree with Scattershot. Dirty stuff and an air compressor fit nicely in that metal box. I figure if I need a generator, a 2KW or so Honda would weigh a lot less than an Onan.

I second the thought about just carrying a smaller generator like a Honda 2000i.

We have solar, and have had to use the generator about 4 times in 10 months. It is real nice to NOT worry about the charge on your batteries.
