I have a short 12 ton bottle jack. I don't think there's a lighter solution. Even being 70+, it's not very hard to slide under the 5er.

I have roadside assistance but change out flats myself if it's safe; on the road in 15 minutes. Tire pressure system warned me and found truck stop 8 miles away in our Next Exit book. I put front tires on a 2 x 10 and was able to lift the rear axle with 1 1/2 ton floor jack. After that, bought the bottle jack.

I have used my hydraulic level system. Have done that for as long as they have been installing them on 5vers. Use them when servicing brakes, bearings, and of course tire changes.

All RV axle manufacturers warn against using any axle to lift any RV. In horror, I once observed an RV dealer begin to lift my trailer using a jack on the axle. Good luck trying get a dealer to pay for your newly bent axle.

Be careful where you put a jack, especially if under an axle. If you bend an axle it will throw your alignment out of whack and will have to get that axle straightened and re- aligned. Best if you can lift directly from the frame, which my not always be possible. My roadside assistance program works for me. Have used it a couple times and glad I had it. One guy was going to lift from an axle and I told him no way. He lifted the whole rig by going under the rear bumper to the frame. Solid, stable way to do it and had it done in no-time.

We had a blow out on 95 south last year...tire was in shreds.

Thank God we had roadside assistance with Good Sams. They arrived in 15minutes. Back on the road shortly after.

I agree trying to get that spare out did not look easy.

They knew what they were doing.

Some of the off-the-shelf ramps do not lift the good tire enough to get the flat off the road because the MorRyde equalizer allows more suspension travel than basic equalizers. I had a metal fab shop make the saddle shown in the photo and I use a bottle jack. The saddle protects the axle from damage that would result in misalignment.

what I learned was if you can drop the tire remove from cable from the spare, then pull coach forward to expose the spare, when replaced just back the coach up over the tire to reattach to the carrier. beats trying to drag the tire out from under your coach.
I realize that this suggestion was a little off topic for the initial post, but for me it’s awesome. Thanks for sharing. We ain’t getting any younger and crawling and pulling the spare out has just become a non-issue. lol.

The safest way to change a tire on the side of the road is to find a safer spot. A parking lot, a turnout etc.

Chock the remaining tires, chock your TV if you can. Bottle jack of appropriate size will work OK.

Be sure to break the lug nuts loose before jacking.

I went for smallest with full ability. I got a 12T kit from Safe Jack with the wider base & extensions, I can get to the frame by the spring hangers, and lift the whole side at once without cribbing if needed. Minimal pumping with the extensions, so its easy and safe. Packs up into a 16” bag, also will help with my truck much easier than the factory jack. Its a one time purchase and done, no matter what our future 5th wheels end up being.

I was stuck in travel needing to change my Off Door Side Rear tire that was rapidly loosing pressure (thank you TST!!). I tried the heavy duty leveling / tire changing ramp (cannot think of the brand) I purchased for just such an occasion. It would not fit between the front tire and the jack. I ended up using the hydraulic jacks to lift the tire (despite the warnings to the contrary) and quickly swapped it out with the spare. It worked great and was painless. I am looking for the right sized jack stand to use "next time" for added safety, and I will ditch the ramp.

I carry a bottle jack as well, but I also have a tire ramp I picked up on amazon. Lifts the effected side up about 5 inches so you can get the tire changed. I have never had to change it on the side of a freeway but I have used it to lift the rig for brake and bearing checks.

Thats the brand i purchased but the trailer aid plus with the extra 1" in the saddle. A piece of beveled 2x6 for 1.5 " extra height for the road armor suspension. . 2 2 1/2 " contruction screws secures the front & 2 3 1/2 " construction screws secures the back of ramp to wood for 1 pc construction & ease of storage . Will still carry my 12 ton bottle jack just in case i need a little more lift on axle with flat tire. Haven't used it yet but to me looks like a much safer option without risk of bottle jack slipping from under axle . 69.00 bucks fdom Amazon.

Absolutely. Be prepared when Good Sam is an hour away and you're trying to reach your campground before dark.
