I stayed at the KOA a few yrs back. It was clean and a reasonable price at that time. right down from it is a (or was) Holiday Trav-L_park that seem nice. Also there are some really nice federal parks altho they had no hookups but had paved sites and right on the beach.

We have spent many many days in the Outer Banks and love it. We stayed at Camp Hattaras in April and really enjoyed the campground. If you are in season make your reservations ahead of time. A real must stop is John's Drive In at the 4.75 mile post on the Beach Road in Kitty Hawk. They have the best Milk Shakes and Dolphin Boat!(forget the hamburgers they are awful!). We have driven 2 hours just to have the milk shakes ( you would think we something better to do). The Outer Banks are a real Treat be sure to see Oracocke Island. The best place to camp there is the National Park but it is boondocking. You can bike into town from there or drive onto the beach if you wanted too.

If you go in the water be careful of the rip tides that can be present. A person I work with drowned in that area last year. He got caught in a rip tide. I'm not exactly sure where they were staying but it was real close to Cape Hatteras.

Am writing this to you from Camp Hatteras, which is probably the nicest park on Hatteras Island. Being based in Raleigh, NC, we've checked most of them out. The KOA is down the street, and I agree it's a nice place too (and a bit cheaper) but for some reason Camp Hatteras seems to be the place we always pick -- more grass, concrete pads, etc. The gas to get here is a lot more than the difference in price between the two. Also, for those that apply Camp Hatteras is listed in Coast to Coast, i believe (or one of those membership places).

And yes, windy here -- like most of Hatteras because of it's location and being so close to the beach, it's always windy here. No matter what CG you choose. Why I guess that the Wright Brothers used Outer Banks to do their first flight!

We have enjoyed Camp Hatteras as well. We were there in November and the heated indoor pool was nice

We've camped at Sands of Time RV in Avon. http://www.sandsoftimecampground.com/
It is a passport America and the rate is $20.00.
57 Total RV sites (15 tent). Full hookups, water electric (20/30/50 amp service), sewer, can accommodate RV’s up to 40 ft, 30 x 50 minimum campsite size, laundry, cable TV, hot showers, and horseshoes. Two bedroom, fully furnished cottages including A/C and cable TV. Park is conveniently located to beach, wind-surfing, fishing pier, restaurants. Located 35 miles from Nag’s Head and Manteo, and 6 miles from Buxton.
We only stayed a few days but found it convenient.
By the way, we entered from the North and exited the islands to the south via the 3 hour ferry ride.
Enjoy it.

Have stayed at Camp Hatteras and it is very nice. The KOA next door isn't as nice. However, if you really want to treat yourself, go to Ocean Waves Campground just down the street from Hatteras & the KOA. It is immaculate, concrete pads with grass & trees and it's half the price of Hatteras but don't tell anyone else. We go there every year and the owners are just delightful. They also know they could charge more but are more interested in keeping it reasonable. You will definetly need reservations because they stay full as you might expect.

I know it's two months late but we have stayed at Camp Hatteras in Waves and KOA in Waves. Both are good and have direct access to the beach just over the dunes. Camp Hatteras also has sites on the sound side if you want windsurfing etc. The cape is only 1/4 mile wide here.

I would recommend either.

Further south we have stayed at Frisco Woods Campground which is directly on Pamlico Sound in Frisco. It's also nice.

Other than that if you want dry camping, the Oregon Inlet NPS campground is beautiful.

There are a few other campgrounds all the way south to Ocracoke but most are not either ocean or sound front and most are small. There are two other NPS campgrounds at Frisco and Ocracoke that are also dry but nice.

Let me know what you think/

Good luck.
