We recently had a 5th wheel pull in across from us. Pulled by a 4500 Series Chevy with a Hauler Bed, but hooked to the back of the 5er was a small utility trailer with two Scooters, Kids bikes and misc other stuff. Turned out they aren't too far from our home in Western NY, so I asked about the legality of the double tow. Fellow said he has asked NY State Troopers and Local Sheriffs and all told him "As long as everything was licensed and inspected they didn't care". On a side note, he did say they were going to upgrade to a big Toy Hauler so they wouldn't need the extra trailer.

I don't intend to start a ugly discourse here, I was just astounded at the size of this towed train. I suspect he was well over 65 feet.

Do your research, do your google searches, make your choices, I am not slamming anyone for your choices, it is afterall YOUR life, your choices.

If you do some google researching, you will find all kinds of answers, each state has rules, and I am pretty sure, each state has officers that will view them differently.

Mrs. CountryGuy is pretty right on about there are laws from state to state and they vary from state to state and their enforcement is even more varying than that. Besides tow sizes and multiple tows, they are equally as varying and confusing about increasing weight ratings.

For example, when I upgraded my F-250 to an F-350 the DMV & CHP (State Police) members had no idea what I was talking about but I was asked to stop by when I found the answers. AFter I completed the research I did stop by and talking to the same folks so they then learned what I was talking about.
They then completed their responses with, "We don't worry about it until there's an accident and to determine liability". This is kinda like, let the problem occur, then we'll blame whomever is illegal. Doesn't this sound like the tire problems, too? The specs look good for a tire, but if the tire fails, then, oh well.

I believe that with most RVers being very conscious and careful and we take care of our issues so well, the visibility or problems is just not prevalent and this mentality will go on for a long time.

We have some motor home friends who have a Newell which pulls an H2 Hummer behind which is a 23' cruiser. They go from KS to FL every year. The Newell itself is 45'. To use a quote our friends pulling 16k Montanas with 3/4 ton trucks like to use..."never had a problem."

I've had to have Joyce flag for me when we stopped for gas at some Love's. Can't imagine trying to get gas with that rig. Oh, and while I'm freaked about that I still pull my heavy Monty with a 3/4 ton Dodge.

When we went through the Montana Plant, I asked about this subject because I was considering pulling my golf cart back and forth to our winter site in Florida from NC with a small utility trailer. Keystone folks told me, automatic void of warranty. Frame is not built for trailing anything. Yes I know, you see folks doing it all the time. Hope they never have to back up and have no flex issues or worse.

There is a 36-38' motor home in the park right now and it rolled in towing an approx. 24' travel trailer w/ a golf cart trailer behind that. Different strokes for different folks...

We're in Branson, Missouri at the moment and just today saw a Jeep being towed behind a 5th wheel trailer. I'd seen utility trailers with golf carts, motorcycles, etc. but this was the first time I've seen someone with at toad behind their 5er.

At an RV park we go to every summer in southern CO, year before last there was a pickup (don't remember the model) pulling an (guessing 38'-40') SOB 5er and behind that a car trailer with an early 60's model full size Pontiac (if I remember right) convertible. Looked at though he may have been headed to a classic car meet somewhere.
That RV park is just below Wolf Creek Pass. And going almost any other direction also requires going over a mountain pass. Don't think I would even consider it.

I have seen a few setups that stretch out to 85'~90'.

Length laws and towing doubles vary by state. Just because you legal in your home state does not mean you are legal in the state you are in. Licensing is recepical but that is about it.

Last summer a guy on the HDT board was pulled over in the midwest. He had his car behind the 5th wheel. He was over length in the state he was in. He had to disconnect before he was allowed to continue.

Also most states that allow you to pull doubles also require brakes on both trailers.
