State Regs

We are planning on making a trip West going Southwest from TN and coming back North. Are there any Kind of special license regulations for states pulling an Fifth Wheel or weight limitations? Thanks for any input

David,

If you and your rig are licensed properly in your home state you are good in all 50 states. You might find a bridge or a road that has a weight or height limit.

You probably will not be doing this but the only thing that might come up from state to state is pulling double, double. A trailer pulled behind the monty. some states do not allow that. Even if your state does.

Avid California at all cost. Fuel here is over $3 a gallon.

My advise to those traveling cross country is to get yourself a truckers road atlas and it will have the postings of weight limits and low clearances for every State. We use it as our "travel bible" when heading cross country. I picked ours up at a truck stop but you can also get them on Amazon.

We also use RV Trip Wizard (owned by the same people as the forum). We use it to plan all of our trips.

for the most part, in the western states not much of a hight, weight, length, wide ( ca calls over sized extra legal) problem... except on some back country roads. keep note of any and all truck restrictions..
double tow is legal pending your dl. and how you are set up.
fuel co$t$ are high in ca. all rental “trucks” must stop at the scales. pending your tow pu truck might have to. ( does it have a none stock bed?).
but for the most part just get out and enjoy.

If you are legal in your state of registration, you're legal in all states. I would be worried about taking I-80 or anything north of I-80 returning home. Even I-70 can be bad until spring.

David, you didn’t mention when you would be traveling. It isn’t just roads you need to worry about. At -14 F our DEF system froze up in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Just a heads up. (A problem regardless of truck brand).

You can also download the Allstays app on your phone for free. They give the hight of all the bridges in the country, plus rest stops, fuel, rv parks and ratings, and more. I use it all the time. Great app! Between this and the Gas Buddy app., I’m good to go.

I have towed my rig in all 48 contiguous states and all of the Canadian provinces that touch the US, plus a couple that don't. We've also taken ferries across Lake Michigan and from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland. No licensing restrictions. One of the Garmin GPS units aimed at RVers will keep you out of trouble regarding weight, height and width restrictions. They also provide propane off notices where that applies. As others have said, the Rand McNally Trucker's Road Atlas has a lot of good info too.

Fuel prices high, but you can drive 62 mph and not get stopped. Drove to Arizona 6 yrs and drove 62 mph since my truck will stay in 6th gear that way. i-5 is smoother after being repaved.

Be really, really careful with the Garmin. It may be good to double check it with another app. Ours took us down a road in TN that it shouldn't have and in Whitehorse, Canada it thought the campground was 19 miles away from where it actually was. We stopped when it had us turn on a road that looked iffy. When we called the campground they said, "you must have a Garmin"
