Secret Compartment

In my last RV I had a hidden compartment under the stair step which made it handy to place valuable items while on the road. I started to look at my 06 Montana Mountaineer 336RLT to see if I could do the same. It turned out that it is not as handy as my previous one, but it does provide an area where you can store quite a bit in the 24" X 18" compartment. You first have to remove the carpet on the bottom riser, but you only need to remove the carpet staples on the ends. There was a long 3" screw holding the riser to the floor, so that screw has to be removed, then the riser can be pried off (held by staples) and removed. The step will need to be re-enforced as the riser will be removable and the wood used for the step is not strong enough on it's own. I used a piece of 1/2" plywood as a center support/divider (see pic). I also put a piece of luan panel at the back of the opening to seal it off from the storage compartment. The riser is then put back in place with a friction snap on each end, and when in place you cannot see the riser is removable.

Check out the pics on the link.

Giddyup!

JPP,

It worked that time - but now it's NOT SECRET anymore! 65,000 people just found out where you keep your gold bullion for ballast!

Neat idea. I tried something like that on my 2955RL, but it had a big ugly flex duct in there for the furnace.

I figured that most of the viewers are members anyway and if there is a criminal element looking at this site for information, they might find someone or something on the other end they did not bargain for. By the way, I only keep our passports there, and my bottle of Tequilla. As for the bullions, they were spent long ago for my two kid's college, I only kept enough for my new Montana.

Giddyup!

Ahhh - you didn't mention the Smith & Wesson security system!

Have a hit of that Tequila and a pat on the back - it's a nice job on the mod.

If anyone reads the 'do you carry' thread...I believe they would pretty much leave this crowd alone...
I know I've been digging around in our rig since my involvement here, and I've found more places for storage than I can use. We have good storage already, but a good hiding spot is always a good idea.

Ahh...tequila...that's next up on the list...it's Friday and work is done - well a few things tomorrow yet.

Hmmm...that link needs to be turned into a hyperlink. Mods?

Another good hiding spot would be under the bottom drawer in the kitchen - at least in the 3400. No one would think of looking there.
I haven't tried it but thought it would work.

Oh and in our 3400 the bottom step has a wood front with cold air return holes for the furnace. Don't think you could hide stuff in there.

Nice job, JPP

We had a compartment under the stairs in our last 5ver. Most whom would break in wouldn't spend that much time looking for that compartment........unless they just read this thread.

I pondered about posting this info, but I felt that most people reading these posts are honest everyday people. After 32 years of law enforcement I am trying to put down my barrier and start trusting people.
How about easy access to the water heater in the Montana Mountaineer (or others)? I made a sliding door where one can easily reach the water heater to close off the winterizing valve etc. If anyone is interested in the pics I will post them. I am a freak in organization and always looking for ways to use every available inches in the Montana.

Giddyup!

That would be very kind of you to post those pics JPP. My valve was a real tough one to get to through the hatch door.

Great job but remember, if you tell someone it is not a secret anymore. I have my little lock up safe in a neat little spot I made and I would love to post a pic but then it wouldn't be a secret any more. Take care.

We did the same thing in our 3475 and store the central vac stuff there. It works great.

Under the stairs on our new 3295 is the cold air return for the heater.
