Firewood

Just a quick heads up. I know many MOCers like campfires and many like to haul firewood. Importation of firewood into Maine is illegal. We don't yet have any of those nasty bugs and we don't want any.

Don't blame you a bit! The pine beetle is wreaking havoc with the lodgepole pines in parts of Colorado. The area around beautiful Dillon reservoir looks like a bomb went off with all the trees down.

Luckily the only tree in my yard with beetles was one of the ones that I took down to prepare a place for Monty.

New York state has a 50 mile limit on transportation of firewood. Please obey all the laws regarding this stuff. Thank you.

Do those rules also apply to kiln dried wood? We go to Maine every year and do bring pallet wood. I do know regular firewood is a no no.

thanks for your help, Kevin

Many campgrounds in NH are also banning firewood importation and that does include kiln dried wood so check with your NH campgrounds before hauling any in. I am assuming that the Maine prohibition also includes any wood (tree or kiln dried) as well but not totally sure on the kiln dried stuff. Last year the Maine forestry guys were stopping campers and swapping out your wood for wood that they provided as an education tool. I would assume that this year there is no swapping going on......just confiscation. The longhorn beetles have caused a lot of problems for those of us who like campfires and have access to our own wood. I guess you can't blame the campground owners for trying to protect their wooded properties.

Kevin I don't know the answer to your question but, it would think the kiln dried would be ok. The beetles live in the bark and there isn't any on kiln dried but I do not know. If I can find the # for the Maine Forest Service I will let you know.

As long as we are on this topic, Georgia also bans imported firewood. I'm not sure it is illegal but they sure discourage it. I would not import firewood to any state just to be on the safe side.
