This reminds me of the friendly retired boatswain's mate we met at Fort Pickens in Florida several years ago. He had lost his wife not long before we met him and traveled alone in a small fifth-wheel. We and an Alabama couple befriended him and took him out to dinner one night. He was from California and told us that he had no planned itinerary, made no reservations, but drove until he was nearly out of fuel. That determined his stay for the night. Terry, we are glad you almost ran out of fuel at Pensacola. We have pleasant memories of our meeting out on Santa Rosa Island.

We drive to get there as well, since we both still work and want to enjoy the down time. I have driven 16-17 hours trip to fl on a couple of occassions but as we age, we try to plan the trips when we can to avoid the extended pulls. Ten hours seems nowadays to be the ideal pull. We will even leave in the middle of the night to make the trips more enjoyable (two daughters in the back seat - enough said). I guess after considering all the above, i can state there are no normal trips, just trips where as others we try to maximize the time that we have off. Some of the things we do, I would not recommend for others, but you did ask!

We are members of the 230 club. 230 miles a day or off the road by 2:30. Works good for us.

Being retired and full timing, we've joined the slower pace. No more than 200-250 miles per day, unless there is an emergency that we have to get somewhere. We also consider spending at least two nights in each camp. That gives us a chance to check out the local area to determine whether we want to stay longer.
We also take our travel a step further. Charles Kuralt once said that the Interstate Highway system is a method to travel coast to coast without seeing anything. This winter we have traveled from Ohio to Florida with less than 20 miles on an interstate. It's amazing what you can find when the pace slows down.

I like the 230 club as it would fit our style.

Because in our past, we fulltimed, we always took our time because we were paying for a site someplace. Habit continues, and we pull out by 0830 /0900 and stop by 1400/1500 and keep the travel time part of the fun.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Looks like we are pretty much in the average of what was posted here. We too like to be off the road and relaxing in the afternoon. I do like the 230 rule!
