Maybe some of you watch the hunting channel 605 on Direct TV ,and caught this particular elk hunt. The bull was taken at 1376 yards, I would think that would be quite a shot for anyone, but this shot was taken by a youngster not sure of his age, but looked to be about 13-14.

What caliber was he using? I have a friend who shot a prairie dog at 2157. This would have been near impossible when I started Ground hog hunting 45 years ago but with much more accurate rifles, better scopes, range finders, wind meters and chronographs it is now possible and even common. 45 years ago 300 yards was a long shot now its a gimme. My first center fire rifle was a custom built Mauser in 22-250 that was guarantied to shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yds. It cost $180. Now a custom action is $1000+ and I don't have a rifle that wont shoot less than 1\2 inch most under 1\4 inch at 100 yds. A lot of the Savage rifles off the shelf will shoot under 1\2 inch some way under.

I can't believe some of the shots you guys are talking about! I can only hope to get on the paper at a fraction of the distance.

So, I've also been looking for a .22LR rifle to "play" with, not compete or anything. I see the ubiquitous Ruger 10/22, but was wondering what others are decent. I like the Marlin 60SN - any other suggestions for a good semi-automatic .22LR for under $300?

I don't know much about off the shelf rim fires but a good bolt action should shoot better than a semi auto. If you get one and would like to get it to shoot as good as it can call me. I make a rim fire tuner that WILL reduce your groups by at least 1\2. The rim fire target shooters can hit this . dot at least 22 times out of 25 times at 50 yards. If they miss a 1\4 inch bulls eye once out of 25 shots they just as well quit shooting. 15 years ago if they hit the bulls eye 20 times and the . 15 times they probably won the match now everybody ask them what is wrong with their rifle. If you call ask for Lynwood and I will give you a tuner.

I would think it was a 300, but don't know for sure, but that is a lot of rifle for a young guy. You may know the guns these days, it would still need a pretty good punch at that range to drop a big bull elk. I just hunt with a Sako 30-06 , I don't think I have taken anything over 300, but that gun was bought 40 years ago, and I still have the original scope on it 2*1/2 - 8 Baucsh & Lomb, but still took an antelope in Wyoming this past fall at about 300 yards.

I thought about a bolt-action. I just got the .308 in a bolt, so I guess I was just looking at something different but no real reason. I've even considered a lever action, but don't know anything about those as far as reliability and whether it is a preferred mechanism. My brother has a 597 Remington he likes.

I still can't believe the accuracy you're talking about - these guys are GOOD!

You will run into a few problems shooting this far with your standard 270, 30-06 or 300 Win mag. Your first problem would be you wouldn't be able to see your target because you haft to hold your rifle so far over the target. Your next problem is the bullets would become unstable at about 1000 yards and start tumbling. You would need some specialized equipment. First a fast twist barrel at least 7\8 inch on the muzzle end a 1 1\4 straight tube would be better with a muzzle brake on the end. You would wont at least a 300 Ultra mag to launch 210 grain VLD very low drag bullets at 3200 FPS. You would wont a good scope something like a Nightforce 8-32 or a 12-42 power. Your scope mounts would need to have about 30 MOA of elevation built in them. If you zeroed your rifle at 1000 yards it would be over 20 inches high at 100 yards and over 200 inches low at 1400 yards and if the wind was 10 mph there would be 10 feet of wind drift. How do you judge the wind at almost a mile? You would need a very good range finder, at 1400 yards there is 10 inches of drop for every 10 yards of distance. So if you misjudged the distance 25 yards you just missed. And if the elk started to move when you pulled the trigger it takes the bullet 2+ seconds to get there and, guess what you just missed again. I've never shot that far. All of my rifles are set up for shooting out to about 1100 yards. My mounts have 20 MOA built in so I can still shot at 100 yards. With 30 MOA in the mounts you cant shoot 100 yards. It's not easy to shoot long distance but it is fun.
